During the Mexican American War, Peter Sr (his dad) went off and fought leaving Cali home with his mom. His dad died in that war, and his mother succumbed to illness not soon after. Cali had to fend for himself most of his life.
Course it became even more complicated when he stopped aging

They fight so much now because Cali was parentified and had to care for Colorado. So in a way? Coco is rebelling against his 'father' but that's not your father Coo that's your brother
They're having a hard time seperating the two.
