"Ohh and you had such a good day, didn't you?" Georgia cooed at the small baby in his arms rocking her gently in his arms. IDC was slowly drifting off, full of cake and other treats from the party, a full day of celebrating her and her twins first birthday. Her dress and face was covered in cake, and Georgia knew he should wipe her down, but she looked so calm and peaceful that he figured that could wait until they properly put her down for bed. Georgia put the baby in the crib and stood back up to face his husband, sighing as he did.

Kentucky hadn't moved since three o'clock that afternoon, even after all the states they invited showed up and wanted his attention. He just sat there, waiting and waiting, waiting for that door to open and Virgiinia or West Virginia, or both, to step inside. He sat there long after the guests left, holding DC who was just finishing up his bottle and falling asleep, still staring at the door, hoping, hoping they'd step through.

No one was coming through that door, however.

Georgia sighed and approached his husband, who without looking took the bottle out of DC's mouth and began burping him.

"Is he ready to go down?" Georgia whispered.

"In a minute." Kentucky whispered, eyes never leaving the door. DC let out the tiniest burp, making Kentucky temporarily look down and smile, before Georgia took him out of his arms. Georgia cradled DC and looked back at his husband who returned to looking at the door.

"Baby...I don't think...."

"They're coming....they have to Georgia." Kentucky whispered. Georgia adjusted his hold on DC and rocked him to sleep, letting his son nuzzle his face into his shoulder.

"Tucky..."

"They wouldn't do this to the twins...me sure but....not the twins." Kentucky whispered. Georgia looked back at IDC napping peacefully and then back at DC who was slumbering quietly, before turning to his husband again.

"Hey, y'know that bourbon you got from when you became a state?" Kentucky nodded. "Why don't we put the twins down, go out to the peach field and have some of it?"

"As soon as they show up." Kentucky whispered, rubbing his hands. Georgia sighed and turned away from Kentucky, going to put DC down next to his sister. He didn't know how to tell Kentucky that they probably weren't coming.

Georgia had finished cleaning up from the party and re-dressing the twins by the time the sun started going down. They were currently on the floor in front of Kentucky, playing with some of the blocks Uncle Ohio got them while Kentucky continued to watch the door. The southern state sighed and continued to sweep, why hadn't it hit him yet that Virginia and West weren't coming. Georgia put down the broom and walked over to his husband, not saying a word but hugging him around his shoulders.

"They're not coming." Kentucky whispered. Georgia kissed Kentucky's hair and put his chin on top of his head.

"No darlin' they're not." Georgia whispered.

"Why....why?" Kentucky asked, looking up at Georgia with tears in his eyes. "I know....I know they hate me...but the babies? The babies are their blood too." Georgia sighed hard and brought him in closer, burying his face in his hair.

"I can't imagine what you're going through." Georgia whispered. He knew Virginia held grudges, but even growing up with him as a colony he didn't know he could hold it this far, especially against his own cousin. And West was probably only following what his older cousin was doing to stay in his good graces. Family was hell.

The two sat together like that for a while, just basking in the comfort of one another, when Kentucky grunted loudly and suddenly IDC appeared on his lap.

"Izzy, did you want attention?" Kentucky said softly. IDC tried to place innocent as Kentucky felt another tug on his leg and looked down to see DC holding up grabby hands. The soldier chuckled and picked up DC and put him on his other leg, making them both clap happily.

"You don't need 'em Tucky. You got us." Georgia whispered, smiling at the scene. Kentucky brought both twins in close, making them both giggle, before looking up at his husband.

"Still got that bourbon?" Kentucky whispered. Georgia smiled and kissed Kentucky's head.

"Get a blanket, let me go grab it."

The sun continued to set below the peach trees, making the sky light up a beautiful pink and yellow color.

"One....two.....UP!" Kentucky yelled, tossing DC up in the air, making the one-year-old squeal happily as he was caught.

"Carefully Tucky!" Georgia called, watching the scene with a smile on his face and IDC on his shoulders.

"I haven't dropped a kid yet." Kentucky announced with a wink, tossing DC back up in the air and catching him. Georgia chuckled and took a sip of his drink, looking up at IDC who was looking at the sunset.

"Is it pretty princess?" Georgia asked, picking up the little girl and putting her on his lap. "It isn't as pretty as you." He looked up and smiled as Kentucky sat down next to him, holding a very happy DC in his arms. Kentucky smiled at his husband and leaned forward, kissing him gently against the cheek. Georgia hummed happily and leaned against Kentucky's shoulder, the two cradling their babies, watching the sun set.

Family was truly what you made it.
