Georgia turned over in bed and reached over to his side, expecting to feel the warm body of his husband sleeping next to him. He frowned when all he felt was blankets, and opened his eyes revealing his husband no longer beside him sleeping. The southern state groaned as he got up, rubbing his eyes and getting out of bed, padding out of his room and into the hall looking for any sign of his husband. He spotted the room at the end of the hall being slightly awash with light, and heard soft muttering coming from inside. Georgia quickly padded towards the room, the soft muttering becoming clearer as he got closer.
"....and you're going to grow up big and strong....yes....papa's already so proud of you...." Georgia peeked inside the room finding Kentucky sitting in the rocking chair by the twin's crib, holding both babies, gently rocking them back and forth against the dim candle light.
"Tucky?" Georgia whispered and Kentucky glanced up.
"Go back to bed Geo, I got them." Kentucky whispered, continuing his rocking.
"I didn't hear them cry." Georgia pointed out entering the room. Kentucky looked down at the babies and continued rocking, not looking up at his husband.
"Tucky...you can sleep....it's okay...." Georgia whispered.
"No....no not after last time." Kentucky whispered, holding the babies tight. Georgia crouched down next to his husband in the chair and could see in the candlelight, tears brimming in his eyes.
"Baby...."
"I can't wake up one morning and the babies are gone, I can't...." Kentucky whispered. Georgia put his head on Kentucky's arm as the tears started falling down his face, looking down at the two babies. DC was peacefully sleeping, the yellow light bouncing over his features making him look angelic. IDC was also sleeping but a little less peacefully, she was wiggling around in her blankets, clearly trying to get out of the hold, wanting to sleep on her own terms.
"He....he would've loved them." Kentucky whispered, finally looking up. "Vania would've loved being an older brother. We would've gotten him a big boy's bed and put it over there, and put the crib in here, and....and ...."
"I know Tucky, I know. I miss him too." Georgia whispered, feeling his own tears begin to fall. He put his head back on Kentucky's arm as his rocking stopped, not affecting DC but IDC let out a little cry in protest. Georgia smiled down at his babies, wondering what they'd be like when they were older, hating himself for imagining them growing up with Vania.
"Y'know." Georgia began. "Penn said something today when I visited him. He thinks Vania knew we needed two babies to fill the holes in our heart, and that's why we got the twins."
"You....you think Vania helped get us the twins?" Kentucky whispered.
"Well I certainly hope he wasn't responsible for Diana's death." Georgia said with a laugh. "But....Vania put the pieces into motion for us to be able to raise the two most beautiful babies in the world."
"Yeah....yeah I like that." Kentucky said with a smile before re-assuming his rocking, satisfying IDC.
"C'mon....let's put the babies back....they need to sleep." Georgia pointed out. Kentucky's grip tightened on the twins.
"No....no Geo I'm so sorry but I can't...." Kentucky whimpered. Georgia sighed before his eyes lit up again.
"Stay here." Georgia ordered before jumping up and dashing out of the room. He thundered down the stairs to the darkened living room, eyes adjusting to the darkness, looking for something previously put away. Eventually his eyes fell on a small crib by the window facing towards the barn. He smiled and grabbed the crib, tucking it under his arm and hurrying back upstairs to the twins room.
"The twins are too young to be sleeping alone anyway." Georgia announced holding out the crib. "Let's bring them to our room."
"Baby....that was..." Kentucky whispered eyes threatening to spill again. Immediately Georgia was at Kentucky's side, reaching up to touch his cheek.
"I know baby, I know. Vania would've had this if he...." Georgia swallowed hard. "But he would've wanted the babies to have it, I know he would've. Plus, if we move them to our room, you'll be near and able to keep them safe." Kentucky looked back at the twins, still slumbering peacefully before looking back at Georgia.
"Get the blankets out of the crib." Kentucky ordered and Georgia grinned. He quickly grabbed a couple of blankets while Kentucky took the twins back to their room, talking to them softly the entire time. IDC fussed when she felt the rocking stop, and even DC started to whine a little, but their cries were soon soothed as Kentucky reached their room, and sat back on the bed, rocking them a little. Georgia returned a little while later, holding the crib and the blankets. He set the crib up on Kentucky's side of the bed, putting a soft blanket down first as a make-shift cushion then taking the twins from Kentucky and placing them inside, draping the blanket over them.
"They look good in there." Kentucky whispered while watching them. Georgia smiled and kissed Kentucky's cheek, as the twins settled down and fell deeper asleep. Kentucky looked over at his husband worriedly.
"And you're sure....they'll be okay....?"
"We'll keep them on your side for now." Georgia said softly, kissing Kentucky's cheek. Kentucky sighed, took one last look at the twins, then allowed Georgia to push him back on the bed. Georgia went on his side, and spooned Kentucky, who kept sneaking glances over at the twins, who continued to sleep.
"Try to sleep love." Georgia begged, kissing Kentucky's cheek again. Kentucky sighed, took one last look, kissed Georgia, then settled down, slowly falling asleep. Georgia smiled and snuggled into Kentucky's chest, letting himself fall asleep.
The next morning, Georgia woke up and immediately checked on the twins. He found two babies desperate for food, and to be changed, still in the crib, alive and well.
