"Peach face over there is number ten."
The coffee instantly went metallic in Georgia's mouth.
He knew his people were there during the insurrection, with the unrest in the state after he flipped and the new voting laws his politicians kept voting in you'd have to be pretty stupid not to think some of your people weren't there trying to storm the Capitol.
But he wasn't expecting top ten.
Georgia could feel some of the state's eyes on him, some were looking at him with sympathy like Virginia who knew he was somewhere else on the list, while others, mostly the west, looked down on him in judgement.
He just wanted to sink into a hole and die.
                              "Ninth place is Kentucky."
Georgia could hear the heavy sigh of his husband as he slumped down in his seat, pulling his hat down over his eyes and crossing his arms. He gently reached over and took his arm, knowing he was boiling with rage right now. He didn't even register the other names being read; he knew the boyfriends were hiding their anger under their dumb competition to be first, but all he could think about as the list dwindled down was how he and his husband, father's to the fed who was laid up on the couch injured and mentally broken from the 6th, were number ten and number nine.
Silence filled the meeting room as Mass finished the list, not even Florida, who 'won' wanted to speak.
"Must feel really good to be in the top ten huh?" New Hampshire pointedly said at Kentucky and Georgia.
"No one asked your opinion." Georgia mumbled attempting to take another sip of his coffee. Metallic, it was all metallic.
"Hampshire they weren't the only ones...." Gov tried but was immediately cut off.
"Yeah but they're the only ones who raised the damn fed!" New Hampshire pointed out.
"Hampshire in case you didn't notice, nearly all of us were in the top ten." California said with a sigh not looking up from his hands.
"Man when DC realizes four of his boyfriends and his dads were in the top ten, he's going to be so crushed." New Hampshire said with a smirk leaning back in his chair.
"Will....will darlin' see the report?" Texas asked in a small voice. Gov sighed and snatched the report back from Massachusetts.
"Maybe. IDC and I can keep it hidden but he'll hear about it eventually in the news." Gov whispered.
"Guys it wasn't us!" Florida piped up, surprisingly being level-headed and strong in his words. "It was our people who stormed the Capitol not us, Dee will understand."
"Yeah but wouldn't you be a little weary that the loves of your life couldn't control their people from potentially harming you?" York asked, glaring at his boyfriend.
"We can't control everyone, Yorkie!" Florida argued, which kick started several arguments around the table. Gov groaned and clutched at his hair, wishing he just ended the meeting earlier instead of letting it spiral. The argument was reaching fever pitch, and Louisiana was about to throw hands when something loud banged on the table silencing everyone.
"WE'RE ALL TO BLAME." Kentuck shouted, ignoring his husband's pleas to sit down. "It's all our fault, alright? And when he finds out he ain't gonna trust any of us. So if you excuse me, I'm going to go spend some time with my son before he hates me forever." The meeting room was quiet as Kentucky stormed out and slammed the door behind him, heart thundering in his chest and adrenaline in his veins. He made his way to the living room where the TV was playing softly. Arizona, who was on watch DC duty for the meeting, smiled at Kentucky as he approached but he quickly moved out of the living room at his angry expression.
"Dee?" Kentucky called gently, looking down at his son laying on the sofa.
"I know Gov does some shady stuff, but he wouldn't cover up if a missile hit a plane." DC mumbled not taking his eyes off the TV. Kentucky chuckled and rounded the couch, sitting down next to DC making the fed look up at him and smile.
"How was the meeting?" DC asked softly as Kentucky put his head on his lap. Kentucky's breath hitched and he prayed his son didn't catch it.
"Normal." Kentucky lied with a smile. "Just some arguing and bickering, Florida messing with Gov, the usual." DC laughed and turned back to the TV.
"I miss them. I can't wait until I can run 'em again." DC muttered humming in contentment as Kentucky began running a hand through his hair.
"You'll be back soon, at the helm where you belong." Kentucky whispered.
"In that tie Izzy got me when Biden was elected." DC added, making Kentucky chuckle.
"Just as long as you can tie it." Kentucky teased, feigning hurt when DC whacked him. The father and son watched TV in silence for a minute before DC looked back up.
"Hey, Gov said we should see the numbers of the...." DC swallowed hard, unable to say the word 'insurrectionists'. "Did he bring it up?" Kentucky's face paled as his mind raced over what to do. His sweet, quiet son was staring up at him, looking for an answer and he didn't want to shatter the illusion just yet.
"He said possibly next week." Kentucky lied, hoping his smile didn't come off too fake. DC hummed and turned back to the TV.
"It'll be interesting to see how many were there." DC whispered, not noticing Kentucky stopped running his fingers through his hair. Kentucky let his head slump against the headrest of the couch, looking up at the ceiling and feeling tears burn in his eyes. This felt like a worse betrayal than when his state went red in both elections. Would DC believe that he, or any of his other loved ones, had nothing to do with it? He'd been so hurt, and now the wound would be reopened again.
"Yeah." Kentucky whispered, voice heavy with emotion, Massachusetts reading off the list fresh in his mind. "It'll be interesting."
                              Number nine.
