Georgia glanced over at the front door opening and closing at the sight of his boyfriend in the foyer.
"Animals are all taken care of." Kentucky announced lighting up his cigarette.
"You did a good job fixing up this place Ken." Georgia said softly, wiping his hands with a towel. "It's actually liveable."
"Lots of elbow grease and luck." Kentucky said with a smile blowing smoke out, approaching Georgia. "The babies?"
"Should be asleep. The wagon ride from Atlanta to Kentucky took their energy." Georgia explained as Kentucky sat at the table.
"Why? They weren't driving." Kentucky teased smiling as he sucked down more smoke.
"Well as long as they stay-" Georgia's head snapped up at a loud cry coming from upstairs. Both men sighed.
"I knew it was too good to last." Kentucky muttered, smashing his cigarette.
"I'll go get them." Georgia announced starting to leave the kitchen before his husband stopped him.
"Wait. You stayed with the babies all day. Let me go see them." Kentucky ordered.
"Ken, you drove us all the way from Atlanta to here, you must be exhausted." Georgia pointed out. Kentucky ignored his husband's pleas, instead choosing to lean in and kiss him softly.
"Let me take care of this. You stay here and relax." Kentucky whispered. Before the southern man could protest, Kentucky was already out of the kitchen making his way up to the second floor of the house towards the crying babies.
"Hard headed." Georgia grumped after him, but not hiding his smile as he continued to work on unpacking the kitchen.
Kentucky entered the small room at the end of the hallway and chuckled at the cries coming from the crib on the side of the room.
"I'm coming." Kentucky said playfully approaching the crip. IDC was up, kicking around crying while her brother slumbered peacefully next to her. The one-year-old had managed to not only kick her part of the blanket off but also her socks in her frustration.
"Okay, okay I'm here." Kentucky said softly, picking up the baby and cradling her. After a couple quick checks to her diaper and then seeing if she'd have any of the leftover milk Georgia fed the twins before they went to bed, sitting back on his heels and gazing down at the baby.
"You just want to be held Izzy?" Kentucky asked softly. As if on cue, another whimper came from the crib making Kentucky smile.
"Don't wanna be without your sissy too long?" Kentucky whispered, reaching down again and picking up DC with ease, cradling him in his other arm. The two babies settled and Kentucky plopped down on the rocking chair he'd built, beginning to rock them gently.
"Y'all didn't make a fuss when daddy and I were moving ya across state lines and now you wanna cause trouble?" Kentucky teased. IDC yawned but DC was still whimpering, and if he started crying again IDC would start again.
Kentucky wasn't one for stories; most of the ones he knew were old Bible ones his mother and father beat into him when he was younger, not the silly ones Georgia could come up with on the fly. And lullabies? Forget it; he didn't have Georgia's singing voice nor knew any lullabies. But he did know one song.
"Have I ever sung Old Kentucky Home to y'all?" Kentucky asked as if the babies would answer him. IDC continued to look blearily at him and DC's bottom lip quivered so Kentucky knew he had to act fast.
"Alright but don't blame me if my singing ain't as good as your daddies." Kentucky teased increasing his rocking and beginning to sing.
Oh, the sun shines bright
On my old Kentucky home
'Tis summer,
The old folks are gay
Well, the corn top's ripe
And the meadow's in the bloom
While the birds make music
All the day
Weep no more, my lady
Oh, weep no more, today
We sing one song
For my old Kentucky home
For my old Kentucky home
Far away.
IDC yawned again, eyelids continuing to droop while DC began to settle, cries became little whines. Kentucky smiled down at his two bundles of joy before continuing the song.
Well, the young folks roll
All around the cabin floor
They're merry, all
Happy and bright
By 'n by hard times will
A-come a-knockin' at my door
Then my old Kentucky home
Good night
Weep no more, my lady
No, weep no more, today
We sing one song
For my old Kentucky home
For my old Kentucky home
Far away.
Georgia glanced up from his needlepoint and looked up at the ceiling. Was that Kentucky? And was he singing? Kentucky never sang, not even while out working. Carefully he put the needlework down beside him and made his way quietly up the stairs so as to not alert his boyfriend to his presence. When he reached the twins bedroom, he saw Kentucky rocking the babies, singing to them gently in the candle light, lulling them to sleep.
Weep no more, my lady
Oh, weep no more, today
We sing one song
For my old Kentucky home
For my old Kentucky home
Far away.
For my old Kentucky home
Far away
The babies let out content little sighs as they fell back asleep, making Kentucky grin. Carefully he got up and placed both in the crib one by one and stared down at their sleeping forms.
"Night babies." Kentucky whispered, reaching down to stroke each twin cheek. "Papa loves you so much, and he's proud of you everyday." The farmer stood over the twins for a few moments, watching them sleep and Georgia watched his boyfriend, heart full and eyes stinging with tears. He was so soft and gentle, he loved his babies with all his heart. He wished he could capture this moment forever and keep it.
Kentucky reached over and snuffed the candle, snapping Georgia out of his stupor. He quickly raced back downstairs to his needlepoint, managing to sit on the couch just as he heard Kentucky close the bedroom door. He didn't glance up as his boyfriend came down the stairs, only glanced up to watch him light a cigarette and blow out some smoke. The bluegrass state pulled the cigarette out of his mouth and looked at Georgia, who looked down and blushed.
"You okay Geo?" Kentucky asked and Georgia thought back to the scene he saw, felt how full his heart still was, and smiled back up.
"Nothing." Georgia said, voice wet. "I'm just thinking how lucky I am is all."
