It was a warm sunny day. DC was happily playing on the ground in the living room while Georgia washed his sister and Kentucky was outside tending to the animals. The nearly one-year-old rolled the duck toy with wheels around his body, happily lost in his world of play when the front door opened.
"Dee, I'm going to put your sister down for her nap and then I'm coming back for you, okay?" Georgia announced walking in with his freshly dressed sister, all worn out from her bath. DC watched his dad go, then went back to playing with his toy when he heard a noise coming from outside, filtering in from the still cracked door. The fed abandoned his toy and toddled over to the door, opening it and peering outside. Standing in the corrial his papa built nearly two days ago, was the brand new house Uncle Southie had gifted them not too long ago. His brown mane shone in the sun, and his tail flickered around and all DC wanted to do was pet him.
Kentucky had shown the twins the horse before, and let IDC pet him but DC was too afraid too, the animal seemingly too big for the toddler to even comprehend. But he felt brave today, and the horse looked friendly, plus if IDC could do it, why couldn't he? DC opened the door and toddled down the front step, nearly tumbling a few times before he reached the ground. Once he gained his footing he made his way to the corrial, the horse not noticing or caring that the one-year-old was approaching and focusing his attention more on the grain he was eating. DC made it to the corrial and easily climbed inside, the gaps between the bars just big enough for his small toddler body to squeeze through. He was finally face-to-face with the giant animal, and for a second the resolve left his body and he wanted to run back inside the house.
But DC gathered his courage, took a deep breath, and toddled towards the horse reaching his tail and staring in wonder at it. The tail flicked again and DC giggled, patting it a few times, surprised at its course feeling. IDC made this look so easy. He patted the tail a few times before moving onto the horse's legs, patting them slowly. The horse's fur was soft, and DC smiled, jumping back when the horse stepped back a little at his touches but resuming petting the horse regardless. He didn't notice the horse's ears had flicked back, nor the aggravated look in his eyes, just as he slowly moved to his belly.
Suddenly without warning, the horse kicked, sending DC down to the ground. The toddler screamed as the horse whined, kicking and withering all around, looking for a way out to run.
"DC!" DC was instantly scooped up by Kentucky, as the horse went wild, clutching onto his shirt and crying.
"The hell's going on out here?" Georgia yelled dashing out of the house to the scene in front of their home.
"Take him, I need to control the horse!" Kentucky ordered handing the hysterical toddler off to Georgia and hurrying to the side of the farm animal. DC cried, his little body shaking in terror as Georgia tried to comfort him. In just one minute the horse went from potential friend to scaring the daylights out of him, and right now Kentucky was trying to get him to calm down. He sobbed hard into Georgia's shoulder as the animal finally calmed down, not even wanting to look into the faces of the two older states as they breathed a sigh of relief.
"I didn't latch the door." Georgia whispered. "He must've got curious."
"Baby? Baby are you okay?" Kentucky asked breathlessly, putting a hand on his back to try and make his son look at him. DC moved his head quickly away, and Kentucky sighed.
"He's spooked." Georgia sighed. He felt DC being taken out of his arms, Kentucky holding him tight.
"Dee? Dee baby, listen to papa okay." Kentucky whispered, making the little boy look at him. "Baby, it's okay. You didn't know, but horses are dangerous animals okay? You can only pet one if me or dad's with you." DC continued to cry but nodded his head, and Kentucky hissed the top of his hair.
"I'm not mad at you, I just got a little spooked." Kentucky whispered. DC whimpered and wiped his eyes.
"C'mon baby, I'll take you in for a nap." Georgia said softly, taking DC back form Kentucky and starting back into the house. He turned back to Kentucky and the corrial; said boyfriend was still staring back at the horse.
"Tucky?"
"I got to baby proof this." Kentucky whispered, turning back and putting a hand through his hair.
"Tucky it won't happen again, we'll keep an eye on them." Georgia pointed out. Kentucky reached into his pocket and pulled out a cigarette, lighting it.
"Nah." Kentucky muttered, blowing out smoke. "I have to make sure it won't."
