"Uncle 'Dina next time, can I get that doll?" IDC asked standing up in the back of the wagon as Indiana jumped down.
"Sure corn pop as long as it's not a dollar!" Indiana announced rounding the back of the wagon and reaching up into the driver's seat. He picked up DC and put him safely down to the ground before reaching up for IDC.
"Oh no I got it." IDC said proudly before leaping down from the driver's seat. She tumbled a little then stood back up with a flourish, grinning happily.
"Do you want to give me a heart attack?" Indiana teased gazing at the twins. He ruffled both the twins' hair and knelt down to their level. "Why don't you go see the chickens and see if they have a couple of eggs?"
"OKAY! C'mon DeeDee." IDC announced taking her little brother's hand. DC let out a tiny 'okay' and then ran off with his sister towards the chicken coop, Indiana watching them go. He took the groceries out of the back of the wagon and walked them inside the house, stepping into the warm log cabin and gazing inside. Kentucky was hard at work at the kitchen table, where he had left him, half a cigarette burned in his hand and several more butts in a small cup next to him. He was pouring over a piece of paper, and looked exhausted. Indiana sighed but put on a happy face as he went into the kitchen.
"We're home." Indiana announced. Silence. The mid-western put his bags on the counter and began unpacking the meager offerings.
"I'm telling you Tuck, your little girl is a master in the store. She talked the clerk down to three cents for an apple. You might have some trouble on your hands when she's older." Indiana continued. Silence, the only sound being Kentucky wiping off something on the paper.
"Hey, why not after dinner we take the twins around the pond. I know DC likes seeing the frogs, and I'm sure IDC will catch a few creepy crawlies." Indiana suggested. Silence. The mid-western man sighed hard and banged his hand hard on the table.
"KENTUCKY."
"WHAT?" Kentucky screamed, nearly dropping his cigarette. He smashed the filter and glared at the mid-westerner, as if Indiana hadn't been trying to talk to him for two minutes.
"I'm trying to talk to you!" Indiana yelled.
"Can't you see I'm busy? I've got to re-build the house back in..." Kentucky swallowed hard. "I have to re-build the house before the war is over."
"Kentucky you've been pouring over those plans for weeks now, you can take a break!" Indiana pointed out.
"I have to give the kids a home, we can't keep intruding on you like this." Kentucky pointed out as the front door opened and the twins dashed inside.
"Uncle 'Dina look! Eggs!" IDC announced holding out three eggs in her hand.
"Why look at that! They'll be great for breakfast tomorrow." Indiana said proudly, taking the eggs from IDC. Kentucky felt a tug on his pants and DC staring at him.
"Papa? Play?" DC asked softly.
"No sweetie, no. I need to work." Kentucky whispered going back to his plans.
"Papa, you're always working." IDC whined.
"Up!" DC begged gesturing up with his arms, signifying that he wanted Kentucky to toss him in the air.
"I said not now. I'm busy." Kentucky said firmly. IDC frowned and DC looked down, making Indiana's heartbreak. IDC gently took DC's hand again and led him away, leaving the two states alone. Kentucky lit up another cigarette and went back to his plans and Indiana sighed, turning back to the groceries.
