Breakfast.

I was a bit on edge. I mean, considering the fact that last night things got a little weird. So, sitting down for family breakfast wasn't the first thing on my list of things I wanted to do.

I keep my eyes mostly down and glued to my plate as I hear them all engaging in conversation around me.

"You guys have fun last night?" His dad asks out loud.

I accidentally choke on a piece of egg.

Joey starts laughing chaotically. "Yeah, I definitely did." He says, finally after containing himself.

"You guys drink a lot?" He then, asks.

"No." Nick quickly, answers.

"I only had two, but they did me in." Joey, chuckles.

I was starting to realize Joey was hilariously, sarcastic. Also, a little crazy.

"So, when are you guys going home?" Nick asks, looking at Joey.

"You don't want us here?" He questions.

"No, it's not like that.. I'm just wondering."

"After you finish football. We obviously, want to be here to support you." Says his dad.

"Yeah, that's cool." He replies.

The chef comes out with some champagne and orange juice and sits it beside Nicks dad. I deliberately watch as she pours him a glass and he takes a drink.

"Damn, dad getting fucked up on mimosas at 8am?" Joey says, scoffing at him.

"I can drink all day if I want to, son. I'm not professionally playing in NFL anymore. I earned my retirement." He scoffs back.

This family was starting to seem a little dysfunctional to me, but I wasn't going to judge because I had zero room to. At least they had each other, I think to myself.

"I'm not playing right now either, but you get on my ass, don't you?"

"Can you both just shut up, please? Why do you always have to argue over this shit." Nick says, becoming annoyed.

"Yeah, coming from the golden child that dad never has anything bad to say about." Joey, snorts.

"I love you both the same, Joey. You know that." His dad replies.
