The desert glass was first observed in the episode "Steven's Lion." It a is a gem artifact that was found in the desert building "stairs that lead nowhere and columns with no roof."This sounds a lot like when Lapis lazuli was building a column of water to get back to the home world. Lapis was trapped in a mirror and communicated through moments she witnessed which suits a mirror. When she was freed she built the column with a broken gem until Steven healed her. I think the dessert glass is a gem that has power over sand. It is not corrupted just trapped inside of a pillow. I also believe that the desert glass can communicate like Lapis but through dreams. This leads me to believe that the gem is actually Jade because Jade is the "Dream Stone."
