My theory is that Pearls replaced Lapis Lazulis and Peridots replaced Pearls. This is shown by the history of synthetic gems. Rubies were one of the first created by the flame fusion process along with Lapis Lazulis in the verneuil process (in earth history 1800's probably not the same for gems). This explains why Garnet was the first to react to Lapis talking to Steven from the mirror. Pearls were cultured(synthesized) in 1920(earth years). Peridots were made as Peridot Cubic Zirconia in 1930(earth years). Which would make sense considering that a Pearl rebelled against HomeWorld they would want a more obedient version of them. This also explains why the gems didn't know Peridot or Lapis. Only Garnet seemed to know her. This would also explain why their outfits, faces, and hair look similar.
