My theory is that if Steven is poofed back into his gem he will die. I think like Lapis the Rose Quartz gem is technically trapped inside a human shell. The mirror was like Lapis' body and Steven is the Rose Quartz's body. If the gem was removed then Rose would come back. Steven is keeping Rose from regenerating like lapis' mirror, the desert glass' pillow, blue diamond's light house, and white diamond's pillar. Steven is almost like a bubble that holds a gem once it pops it gone and another bubble replaces it.
