My theory is that the Kindergarten mutated humans into gems. Pearl said that Kindergartens would destroy all life on earth. What if the life energy from humans was used to sustain the gem warriors. Amethyst tells us that she was made on Earth just like Steven in "on the run". She also acts the most human out of all of the gems. This might explain why she looked like a toddler in "Story for Steven" and in "We need to talk".
