My theory is that Lars is transgender. In the episode with Tiger Millionaire Steven's speech was to Amethyst but also to Lars.
He was the wildest cat in the jungle.
So wild that the other cats couldn't take it.

So she- I mean he (insinuating Lars changing from she to he)
Went to look for somewhere he fit in
Somewhere with other people who felt misunderstood. (Renaldo)
This is supported by Rebecca Sugar answering the question, " could there be any transgender characters?" And she replied "of course there can! It's rated PG so that gives us the freedom to!" It also explains why Lars was so infatuated with Tiger Millionaire.After Steven made that speech Lars immediately changed how he felt and loved him again.
