My theory is that the Destabilizer was made for metals. When Lion goes after the desert glass his roar breaks the sand it makes. When he is fighting Steven's water projection he uses his roar. When Steven's shield is hit the sound vibrations take out all of the projections. This means that sound is a weakness for the metals. Of course Lion(bismuth) would know this, this why he was roaring instead of getting physical like the others. This is why the gem Destabilizer is shaped like a tuning fork. It was meant to shatter metals and not for use on gems. That might explain Peridot's face when she saw Jasper grab it.
