This means at one time after meeting Greg there was another reason to use the cannons. Greg also says in "the return" when they're evacuating. "They are not going to start caring about people now they didn't the first time they-" he the cuts off and says after Steven asks him about what he was about to say "it was thousands of years ago. It's -it's not like I was there." What if what he was about to say was "the first time they came back." So possibly the fusion on the temple is the fusion that won the war.
