He looked up from his lap with an eyebrow raised. She didn't ask anymore questions. Shewanted to hear what he was going to say, and from the look on his face, he was about to give her an explanation. He sighed in defeat, and then reluctantly spoke.
"She's great, alright? Yes, we had a fight, about me not coming back this morning, because she woke up last night and I was gone. I tried to explain to her I was here with a friend, she assumed I was being unfaithful. I told her you were 16, and she thought..."
He trailed off, and her jaw dropped slightly as his eyebrows went up.
"Yeah. She's great, with handling the job, not seeing me for a while here and there. But she's angry that I chose supporting someone I cared about over her. I told her I'd see her in the morning, but I haven't left the hospital, because I didn't want something to happen to you while I was gone. She's been texting me all day, and earlier I called her to tell her I just needed today, and she was pissed. Said she didn't like that I was beginning to prioritise my job and other people over her. I haven't gone home yet because I'm not really in the mood to deal with what's waiting for me, and to be honest, I care more about you being safe right now than I care what she thinks about how I spend my time. This is important. If she can't understand that then I'm not going to try and make her."
Lennox nodded as she processed the argument. From Jay's point of view, it sounded like this Chelsea girl was being incredibly inconsiderate. From Chelsea's point of view and just as a girl in general, she could understand her frustrations. Maybe it was just because she didn't know this women, but Lennox felt good about the fact that Jay considered her more important than his own girlfriend. Then again, maybe she just liked that his attention was on her. For a second she wondered if going back to the house was the right decision, especially when she knew how angry Jay would be if she did. Even though they hadn't seen each other in years, he still seemed to be the only person who could make her second guess her actions.
