Let him go

Well, you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go

Charles sat in his office, washing the pain away with scotch. Erik had left him at his highest and now he had crashed. He had no energy to do anything. The man he loved - gone.

Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go

"Why did I do that?" Was the thought that ran through Erik's head the last 10 years. It was only after he left did he realise how much his heart ached for Charles. He couldn't bear it much longer.

And you let her go

"Why did I let him go." Thought Charles.

"Why did I go." Erik whispered.

Staring at the bottom of your glass
Hoping one day you'll make a dream last
But dreams come slow, and they go so fast

Sipping his alcohol, Charles sighed. It felt as though it was all a bad dream. He wished it wasn't real. But alas, as he washed stared into empty space he knew that it was real.

You see her when you close your eyes
Maybe one day, you'll understand why
Everything you touch surely dies

Closing his eyes to try and get some rest, Erik sighed. As he tried to get to sleep, all he could see in his mind was the face of the man he loved - the man he left.

But you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go

"I love him." Both Erik and Charles whispered into the darkness "and I let him go."

Staring at the ceiling in the dark
Same old empty feeling in your heart
'Cause love comes slow, and it goes so fast

Charles' heart ached for Erik, without him he felt lost. He was a shell of the man he used to be. Despite everything he did, despite all the times he wished he didn't love the man, Charles couldn't help but love Erik.

Well, you see her when you fall asleep
But never to touch and never to keep
'Cause you loved her too much, and you dived too deep

"I don't deserve him, he probably hates me, he doesn't even know how I feel. He saved my life and this is how I repay him." Erik muttered. Images of him and Charles flooded through his mind, chess, roadtrips, the day in the water. Everything was overwhelming.

Well, you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go

The candle died and Charles was left in darkness. He sighed and tried to fall asleep. He couldn't. His mind raced. He couldn't think about anything other than Erik.

And you let her go
Oh, oh, mm, oh
And you let her go
Oh, oh, uh, uh
Well, you let her go

A tear rolled down Erik's cheek. He couldn't deal with anything anymore. He needed Charles. He needed to see him, to talk to him, to hold him.

'Cause you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go

Charles began to cry quietly, "Why'd he leave me? I loved him and now he's gone - he's probably not coming back."

'Cause you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go

"And you let him go" Both men whispered to themselves as they fell asleep.
