"I can't believe this," You mumbled annoyed, putting down your phone turning around to the rest of the group."Grant and Simmons were needed in their own team, Coulson just called," you said staring down at your own hands. You knew you had to rotate people around. People wouldn't like it, but it didn't matter.
"Fatima, you step into Simmons shoes, I trust that together we will be able to cover her," You said walking over to her, giving her a file.
"Of course, I got your back," She smiled, as both of you gave each other a high five. You loved a confident woman like Fatima. Now, over to the worse deal of the plan, which you knew would turn heads. You looked out to the group and swallowed low.
"Sam you will step in for Grant, while Steve you will take Bucky's place, and Bucky you will cover as a bodyguard," you said, your tone strict.
What the hell? Steve wasn't a big guy when it came to swearing, but he couldn't believe how childish you just became. He thought the two of you were on great terms, and now you suddenly set him up on a mission as your friend partner, instead of being yours. Sam, you really put Sam as your partner. For some sick reason, Steve couldn't help but feel a bit betrayed by your actions. He could feel the eyes of Bucky burning into his neck.
"Great," Sam said, you walked to him giving his file.
"Thank you, Sam, for being so flexible," You said, still looking at Sam as you gave Bucky the file.
You walked over to Steve, and he didn't even reach out his hand for the file. You had to put it in his arms. You could feel his cold eyes staring at you. You knew he wasn't happy, but honestly – he should be. You did this to save your relationship. Literally. Both with you and Grant, but also for you and Steve. You didn't want to have real emotions for Steve, and you knew it was building up in you now. Him following Fatima, was a way of securing space between the two of you.
"Go and change, we'll meet later at the meeting point," you said, clapping your papers together, as you walked out. Leaving no room for discussion.
Ugh, Steve irritated you. Even now, an hour later, as you were in the middle of trying to fix your corset, you still thought about how childish he was. He couldn't even say thank you or act professional in front of the others. He was just a cold douchbag. Not only were you irritated at Steve, but you were irritated at Grant. You were not supposed to be struggling taking on the corset alone by the mirror, you were supposed to have your boyfriend here helping you. In this instant moment, you wanted to tear the dress apart.
Then the door rang.
Fuck, you held the dress to your chest as you walked over to the door, checking first who stood outside. Great, it was an insanely well-dressed Steve Rogers. You swore low to yourself, and just tried to stand still. You didn't want to open the door, you wanted to act like you weren't home. For all he knows, you could've gone early to the mission.
"Y/n I know your there," Steve said, his voice was cold.
You still didn't open.
"Okay, if you want to, I'll break up the door, and the whole hallway will be alarmed," he said irritated.
You opened the door and walked in. Steve didn't spare a second and wandered in, slamming the door behind him. Again, you couldn't stop thinking about how childish he was behaving. He acted like a complete brat. Who did he think he was to just come in here storming your dorm. Captain fucking America? Does not impress you.
"What the hell is wrong with you!?" Steve slammed the door as he walked into your apartment.
Steve stopped dead in his tracks when he took in the sight of you. You were wearing a beautiful white dress full of pearls. It looked like you had come straight out of an fairy tale book. Your hair was perfectly set up, looking like the actresses from movies that Steve had seen together with his father, elegant 40's look. You makeup was simple but classic, with sharp red colour. If Steve didn't know better, he would've thought you were getting ready to walk up the alter.
"What the hell is wrong with me!?" You shouted back at Steve popping him out of his bubble.
Steve walked closer to you.
"You know I should've been the-" Steve yelled, before you cut him off.
"The one by my side!? C'mon, get out of your own head, it's work," you said, waving your hands at him.
"If it was work, you would've put me with you," Steve laughed frustrated at how childish you were being.
"I would- I would've put you with me?" You laughed shocked. You walked closer to him and pointed at his chest angry.
"Tell me Steve, who is the most famous of you and Sam?" You shouted.
Steve turned silent. You pointed at his chest again.
"Tell me Steve, on an undercover operation, where even if you like it or not, I AM THE KEY to unlock the mission, is it smartest for me to have YOU or SAM by my side?" You yelled, your finger almost hitting him every time you lifted your voice.
"If something happ-" Steve's voice was stern.
"You trained me. If something goes wrong, I'll get up," you said stepping away from him, turning around so you didn't have to face him anymore.
"You cannot protect yourself, you know that" Steve said, his voice sounded cold.
You wanted to kill the man behind you. He had no right to be such a bitch. Just because you didn't engage with his combat classes, did not mean that you were not able to protect to yourself. You had many tricks, that you had never even shared with Steve or anyone at the academy. After all, you passed to come into the academy. You were just as good as everyone else, perhaps even better. You had been trained since a child.
"Steve I'm a daughter of military parent-" You began, before Steve cut you off.
"And how did that go?!" Steve shouted out.
Your heart fucking dropped.
"Y/n you couldn't even protect yourself from them"
