"Okay and push!"
When I was beginning on the job training for Mediwizardry school, I didn't anticipate performing the duties of a damn midwife.
We were called out to a job where a woman thought she had been cursed and needed transporting to St Mungos. Turns out she was just pregnant and didn't even know it, so I found myself at the messy end, gloves on ready to catch this phantom baby.
The woman pushed hard and I saw the head appear.
"Oh my..." I muttered to myself.
I had done this myself once before and was preparing to do it again in no less than two months and I'd almost had to do it when Cecilia had Larissa... but something about being here watching it up front and close made me feel uneasy.
"Well done, you're doing great." I encouraged. With two more pushes the incredible woman managed to get her baby out of her and I placed it right on her chest.
My supervising mediwizard gave me a pat on the back and decided we would still transport her to St Mungos to look over herself and the baby considering she didn't even know she was pregnant.
"Good work, Sallow. You did well. Nervous for your own delivery now?" My supervisor asked.
"I was nervous the second I found out." I laughed.
But yes, fucking shit scared.
This time around, I was working right up until delivery. I couldn't afford anymore time off school than necessary. I needed to finish, to be qualified. So I was seven months pregnant and tending to all sorts of injuries and maladies. It did earn me quite a few funny looks walking around in a medic uniform with a large bump considering most people thought of pregnancy as a malady itself. But I knew better.
"I delivered a baby today." I told Sebastian over dinner.
His eyes traveled down to my stomach and back up again, "You still look pregnant to me."
"Oh, aren't you funny?" I rolled my eyes.
"I try." He smirked. "But seriously, how did that go?"
"It was... scary. But it was incredible to see just what the female body can do."
"I've told you that before, what you did was bloody amazing." Sebastian reassured me.
"Yes, well, it's hard to envision it when you're the one doing it. But watching her do it was just amazing. And also scary. I have to do that myself soon."
"And you'll do amazingly just like you did the first time." He said, standing up to give me a kiss before clearing the table and taking the dishes to the kitchen.
I tried hard not to think about it, but with the imminent delivery so close, it was the only thing on my mind.
Or, so I thought I had two months.
On a random August Friday, I walked into St Mungos for a regular shift. I'd be on call today, ready to attend any emergencies and treat them or bring them back to the hospital. It was a quiet Friday. Myself and my other students and senior Mediwizards spent most of our time sitting and waiting to know where we'd need to go and engaging in small talk.
So far I gathered that my superior, Maggie, has been married three times now, all her previous husbands succumbing to some suspicious disease. The other trainee, Penelope, about my age, is from a prestigious pure blood family who didn't let her attend Hogwarts and she's disappointed them by not marrying and going to medical school and I was married with a child and one on the way but I was working and not bed ridden. We were a real bunch of misfits.
