It was around 2 AM and Devon was woken up to the sound of static. Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he turns on his lamp before grabbing the walkie-talkie off his nightstand. Sitting up in the bed, he clicks the button and patiently waits for his boyfriend to pick up

"Devon." Jake choked up

"Hey, what's wrong?" Devon asks, concern laced in his tone

"I need you. Please come over, please!" Jake cried

"Hey, calm down. I'll be right there. Hold tight, okay?" Devon whispered

"Okay. Thank you." Jake sniffled

Once he disconnected the call, he puts on his slippers and tiptoes to Jake's room, lightly knocking on the door to gain his attention. A few minutes later, Jake opens the door and steps aside to let him in. Devon took in his appearance, he looked absolutely drained. His hair was a disheveled mess and his eyes were puffy, most likely due to the crying. Letting out a choked sob, Jake collapsed into his lover's embrace, allowing the warmth of his hug to consume his thoughts

"Hey, calm down. I'm here." Devon rubbed circles on his back

"I didn't want to wake you up. I thought I could handle this on my own. I'm sorry, Devon." Jake cried

"You have nothing to apologize for, Jake. I'll always be here for you. I know if the roles were reversed, you'd do the same for me." Devon coddled him

"I'm such a freak! Maybe my dad was right. I'll never amount to anything. I'll always be Jake Wheeler, the weird loner kid who has a sick obsession with dolls." Jake says

Devon takes him to the bed, gently caressing his cheek before planting a soft kiss on his forehead

"Your father didn't know you. Nobody in this world knows you better than I do. Believe it or not, I love your weird fucking art. I love your laugh, I love your sense of humor, and I love you. The things you don't like about yourself are the things that make me love you. Don't change who you are just to make other people happy. I love you, the real you. Always remember that." Devon rambled

"I don't deserve you." Jake chuckled

"What can I say? I'm one of a kind." Devon grinned

"I had a nightmare. It was about my mom, and the car accident." Jake whispers

"Is that why you were crying?" Devon asks

"I'm sorry. It was stupid of me to bring it up." Jake pulled his knees close to his chest

"Hey, don't do that. Don't you dare go into hibernation. I'm right here, ready to listen. Just talk to me, Jake. Don't shut me out." Devon begged

Jake looked into his lover's eyes, realizing that he was in fact concerned for his well-being. After giving himself a pep talk, Jake took a deep breath before speaking

"I hate remembering that night. Even before my mother died, my dad had a few drinks from time to time. One night, he threatened to kill her; right in front of me. Right then and there, she decided that would be the last time she'd put up with his childish ways, so she packed our things and we stowed away in the car." Jake trembled

"What happened next?" Devon asks

"It started raining; it was a light sprinkle at first. As time passed, the rain got stronger, and the sky started rumbling. I started screaming and crying. I was so scared. My mother was too busy trying to calm me down, she didn't notice the car in front of us. The next thing I knew, I woke up with a bloody forehead, and my mom's lifeless body was lying in front of the car. She didn't have her seatbelt on, and it resulted in her flying through the windshield." Jake's eyes welled up with tears
