Around 2 AM, Tori woke up with a start, letting out a chilling scream that pierced the silence of her small room. Sweat dripped down her forehead as she pulled her knees close to her chest. With trembling hands, she slipped on her brother's jacket, allowing the familiar scent to envelop her like a warm blanket. She hugged herself tightly, tears streaming down her cheeks as she desperately wished for his presence. Closing her eyes, she thought, If I wish hard enough, he might come back, but when Tori opened her eyes, the darkness of her room greeted her, cold and unyielding. She sighed, put on her slippers, and quietly padded across the hallway towards Lexy's room. A soft knock at the door echoed in the stillness, and she barely had time to breathe before Lexy swung it open, her eyes immediately searching Tori’s face for answers.
"Calm down, what happened?" Lexy asks
"I had a nightmare." Tori stuttered
"Was it about Sam?" Lexy asks
"It's like I'm being haunted." Tori muttered
"Here, drink this." Lexy handed her a bottle of water
"I'm sorry for waking you up, I didn't know who else to go to." Tori says
"It's okay, really. Honestly, I'm a night owl. Insomnia really kicks my ass most of the time." Lexy chuckled
"I have something to tell you. I haven't told anyone else, not even my parents. Lexy, promise me you won't squeal, not until I'm ready to tell everyone." Tori gripped her arm
"Yeah, sure. I promise." Lexy assured
As she gazes at her chipped nail polish, she catches a whiff of her brother's cologne on his jacket, which brought tears to her eyes. Pushing away the negativity brewing in her brain, she glanced at Lexy, who was patiently waiting for her to speak. With a trembling breath, she retrieved a bottle of oxycodone from her brother's jacket, handing it to Lexy before closing her fist. Feeling ashamed, she hangs her head, unable to meet Lexy's gaze, her curls falling into her eyes as she shakes her head. Lexy inspects the bottle, counting the remaining pills before turning back to Tori, her eyes losing their sparkle in the dim lighting.
"Before you say anything, I haven't relapsed." Tori muttered
"Why do you have this, then?" Lexy asks
"Sometimes, I get urges. You're a recovering addict, I'm sure you know a thing or two about that." Tori sniffled
"Yeah, I do. Luckily, I got some help. Thanks to my friends, I've been clean for about a year now." Lexy explains
"The night I overdosed, I lost consciousness for a period of time. It may seem unbelievable, but I believe I encountered my brother at the end of a bright tunnel, beckoning to me. Sam was encouraging me to return, insisting that it wasn't my time to go yet. I was faced with a decision - to leave or stay. Feeling there was nothing left for me, I desired to end all the pain and anguish by leaving." Tori says
"Tori, I know how much you miss your brother, but this isn't the way." Lexy shook the bottle of pills
"I know. I need help, Lexy. I can't do it by myself, not anymore." Tori cried
"I got you, okay? I got you." Lexy embraced her
"I didn't have anyone to help me through my addiction, not like you do. I shut everyone out, stayed cooped up in my room for long periods of time. My parents didn't even bother to ask me if I was okay. They thought I was doing it for attention, but the fucked up thing about it was that it took nearly overdosing for them to acknowledge my existence." Tori's eyes watered
"Well, join the neglectful parents club." Lexy muttered
"Honestly, my brother's death wasn't entirely the reason why I overdosed." Tori says
