It was 2 AM and Jazz was tossing and turning in his bed, unable to fall asleep after waking up from a gut wrenching nightmare. Putting on his slippers, he tiptoes downstairs to the girls dorms and heads to his sister's room, quietly knocking three times and waiting for an answer. The lock turns and Vanessa opens the door, slightly surprised by her brother's presence
"Hey, what's going on?" Nessa asks, looking around to make sure the coast was clear before pulling him inside
"I couldn't sleep." Jazz says
"Jazz, that's why you have Billy rooming with you. Doesn't he help you through a rough night?" Nessa rubbed the sleep from her eyes
"Yeah, but I just wanted to talk to you instead." Jazz trembled
"You're shaking, what happened?" Nessa asks, slowly setting him down on the bed before fetching him a bottle of water
"I saw him again, in my nightmare." Jazz whispered
"Who?" Nessa asks
"I saw our father." Jazz's eyes welled up with tears
Nessa plops down next to him, pulling him into her arms before planting soft kisses on his forehead
"Tell me what happened." Nessa rocked him back and forth in her arms
"He beat me up and locked me in the closet. I was banging on the door, screaming at the top of my lungs. My knuckles were covered in blood by the time I was done punching the door. No matter what I did, I still ended up getting swallowed by the darkness. It kept getting closer and closer until it completely consumed me." Jazz's voice quivered
"These nightmares make your PTSD worse, don't they?" Nessa asks
"Yeah, they do. When I got thrown into the closet at the party, I freaked out. If Billy wasn't there, I don't know what I would've done." Jazz's hands trembled
"How long have these nightmares been going on?" Nessa rubbed her hands together
"It's been going on since we got split up. Nothing was ever the same after that." Jazz says
"What do you mean?" Nessa asks
"Dad consumed alcohol to numb the pain, it was only a temporarily fix. At some point, I got wrapped up in it. One night, he got so angry, he threw a beer bottle at me. One of the pieces from the bottle broke and it got lodged in my cheek. It hurt like hell when the doctors pulled it out." Jazz explains
Nessa got up from the bed, tugging on her hair while pacing back and forth. Taking deep breaths, she tries her best to keep her anger from bubbling to the surface, but it was only making matters worse. Soon, she felt a pair of hands grab ahold of hers and she opens her eyes, coming face to face with her brother, who gave her a heartfelt smile to calm her nerves
"Jazmere, I did not want to leave you behind." Nessa says
"You got the better end of the deal, sis. Mom made sure to give you the life you always dreamed of, I'm proud of her for doing so." Jazz squeezed her hands
"None of it meant anything to me. I just wanted you, my brother. That was all I wanted, but I couldn't even have that. Having you around was the only thing in the world that would've made me happy. What was the point of living a good life if I couldn't share it with you?" Nessa's tears overflowed
"Hey, don't cry. Everything's alright, I'm here now." Jazz embraced her
"I'm so sorry, Jazz. I'm sorry for everything." Nessa cried
"It's alright. Come on, let's get some sleep. When our heads are clear up, we'll finish this conversation." Jazz kissed her forehead
"Goodnight, Jazz." Nessa kissed his cheek
