"Tetsuro, Himari, come downstairs! We're going to the neighbors house!"
Tiny feet pattered down the stairs and a young boy with terrible bedhead and a young girl with glasses on her face and clips in her hair made their way to the front door.
"Mari, hold my hand." The young boy told the girl.
She did as she was told and held his hand as they waited to leave with his dad.
"Are you two ready?" A man with black hair asked.
The two children nodded and followed him out of the house. They didn't need to walk, so they ended up in front of the next house in just a couple of steps.
Himari held onto Tetsuro's hand tightly as they waited for the door to open. When it did, a nice lady answered and smiled.
"Hi, we're the new family next door. I'm Kota Kuroo and this is my son, Tetsuro and my granddaughter, Himari." The man introduced them.
The woman looked shocked at the fact that he had a granddaughter, but smiled after a few seconds. Himari peeked out from behind Tetsuro and noticed a young boy hiding behind the lady. She smiled and waved to which the boy returned shyly.
"I'm Yuka Kozume, and this is my son, Kenma." She said as she pushed her son in front of her.
"You three should go play upstairs. I'll make snacks and bring them up later."
The three nodded and followed Kenma up the stairs to his room. For about five minutes, they just stood there until Himari got bored.
"Do you guys wanna do something?" She asked.
"Wanna play Virtua Fighter 4?" Kenma asked.
Tetsuro nodded and then looked at Himari who smiled, "Okay!"
~
"Woah, you're really good at this Kenma!" Himari exclaimed as she pressed random buttons on the controller.
"No, you're just bad."
Himari frowned and Tetsuro patted her head with a smile. Himari shrugged and nodded,
"You're right, I'm just pressing random buttons."
Kenma sighed and sat on the floor next to Himari. He took the controller from her and began telling her what they did and how to play the game.
"I get it!" She exclaimed.
"Let's play again then." Kenma said as he made his way back to his seat.
When Kenma started the game, he was surprised at how fast Himari learned. He smiled to himself as he finished the round. Himari smiled brightly at Kenma.
"That was fun!"
"Tetsuro, Himari, it's time to go home!"
Himari and Tetsuro stood up and said goodbye to Kenma before they left.
After that, Himari and Tetsuro would go to Kenma's house whenever all the adults in their house were gone for work.
One day when Kenma was about to start a new round of Virtua Fighter 4 he stopped and looked at Tetsuro and Himari.
"We always play this, do you want to play something else?"
Tetsuro brightened up and quickly left the room. Kenma looked at Himari, but she just shrugged. Soon, he came back with a volleyball.
"I meant video games." Kenma said, obviously irritated.
After a while, the two kids were able to convince Kenma to play volleyball with them outside.
Himari played with them for a while before getting tired and walking around. She found some flowers and made flower crowns.
Tetsuro allowed Himari to put the crown on him, and Kenma was a bit apprehensive, but allowed her to put it on his head as well.
As they were walking home, Himari suddenly remembered something and smiled brightly.
"Tetsu, my dad's coming today! He said he brought something for us!" Himari exclaimed.
Tetsuro's eyes widened, he smiled and turned to Kenma, "Her dad is so cool! He was the ace of the U-20 team when he was in high school and now he's the assistant coach for Japan's volleyball team!"
Kenma nodded, a little intrigued and the three (mostly Himari and Tetsuro) continued to talk about volleyball all the way back home.
~
When Saturday came along, the three went to a volleyball camp. Himari and Tetsuro were buzzing with excitement.
"You ready? Cause I'm going to open the door now! I mean it, we're going inside right now!" Tetsuro said as he held the door handle.
"Then go." Kenma said.
The three went inside and watched the other kids play. Himari and Tetsuro were jumping up and down as they watched. Eventually, the two boys began doing receiving drills while Himari had to sit out since she was too little.
"That's called spiking, it's super cool! But you can only do stuff like that if you're super tall." Tetsuro explained to Kenma.
"Why don't we lower the net then?" An old man asked from beside Himari.
All the kids smiled at the old man and the adults lowered the net for the younger kids. Himari looked up at the man and he gave her a smile.
"Hello young lady, how are you?"
"I'm good! Do you play volleyball too, mister?"
He chuckled before answering, "I'm a little too old for that now, so I coach high schoolers at Nekoma."
Himari tilted her head, "Cats?"
"That's right."
Himari smiled, "I like cats."
"Me too."
~
Since that day, Tetsuro joined a new volleyball team and became friends with other kids at school. He would hang out with them often, but Himari always stuck to Kenma.
She liked watching him play video games, and he enjoyed her company. He liked when she asked him questions about his games and she liked listening to what he had to say.
Eventually, the two became best friends, they became inseparable.
