You had been attending a party with your parents, it was very fancy in someone's mansion whose you had no idea. You also didn't know the reason for the party, your parents told you that you would be attending and you didn't bother to argue. It was free wine after all. You got dressed and left in your carriage to go to the party. You were already bored and you had only been there for an hour. The only reason you weren't completely miserable is because your best friend Janet was there to keep you company.
"This is so boring, everyone is talking about politics like always. I wish a party could just be a party for once instead of people trying to make impressions, flaunt their money and talk about politics." You whined.
"I know, there's never any excitement. Just drunks and the smell of liquor." Janet complained.
"Any suitors here that you're looking for or are none present?" You asked, knowing she had a few men that were rumored to be looking to have her hand.
"Sir Mark is here and Sir Peter. I'm waiting to see if either of them can pull themselves away from their conversations to speak to me. If not then that's all the information I need."
"It must be nice to have options."
"It is, I'm sure a man is going to come around for you." She smiled.
"Maybe, but not the one I have my eye on." You sighed.
"You mean the Judge? I can't believe he's the man you are so interested in. Does his age not bother you?" Janet rolled her eyes at you.
"It does not. He is very handsome and I think even though he seems to have a cold exterior he would be kind and sweet to his wife. The idea of having a man who is good only for you. Does that not intrigue you? The idea of being the one thing he has to be good for."
"No, because you are hoping he'll be good for you but you don't know. You don't even know if the man fancies you." She shook her head. Turpin walking through the front door however, caught her eye. "But there is a way we could find out."
"Really, how?" You asked a little too excitedly.
"We make him jealous. There are plenty of other men here, I think we should get Sir Mark and Sir Peter to come speak to us and you can act a little more interested in than normal and we'll see if he reacts. Plus they have both had a good bit of alcohol so I'm sure they're feeling...loose enough to not feel bad about a little flirting." She suggested.
"But they are both your suitors. I wouldn't feel right flirting with them, especially when you don't even know who you will be choosing." You shook your head.
"It's harmless flirting and I don't mind it. Trust me, this is a good way to see if Judge Turpin fancies you." She insisted.
"Alright, fine." You nodded. Smirking Janet dragged you over to where Sir Mark and Sir Peter happened to be speaking. They were both decently buzzed at this point in the night.
"Sir Peter, Sir Mark it's nice to see you both, this is my friend Y/N." She introduced you.
"Ah Miss Y/N, looking lovely tonight." Sir Peter flirted with you.
"She does, but then again she always looks beautiful." Janet nudged you.
"Why thank you." You smiled.
"Why don't we go get a drink?" Sir Mark suggested.
"Sounds like a perfect idea." Sir Peter agreed. They led you and Janet over to the bar where you all ordered drinks. You were going to walk away when Janet grabbed your arm to stop you. Following her line of vision you saw Judge Turpin approaching the bar as well. He ordered himself a drink, he was only about a foot away from you.
