He smelled like leather and aftershave. Fucking aftershave. Her group, her brother, her daughter didn't have food to eat or a pot to piss in and he got aftershave.
She walked beside him, feeling his broad shoulders bump into hers occasionally. She watched along the fence, seeing the people in the shitty sacks of clothes fight their way from the walkers, watching his men pace the fences with machine guns, so much ammo, so many weapons.
"What's your favorite season, Red?" Negan spoke up, that usual proud smile stuck on his face.
"What?"
"Your favorite season. Mines Summer. God I love the heat, seeing all these people sweat their way to save their lives. Heat makes people even more scared and uncomfortable. So... What is your favorite season?"
She narrowed her eyes at him, looking at him with a look that said it was a stupid question.
"I don't have one."
"Bullshit. Come on, what the fuck am I gonna do with knowing your favorite season? Use it against you? It's a harmless question, Red."
"Fall. I like fall." The sound of the leaves crunching, the cool air. Everything about it reminded her of when the group first got to the farm. God she thought life was so hard then. She thought she only had a few more weeks to live at most. Now, she almost wished she had.
"Figured. Well with the hair and all... You're an autumn." He smirked, pulling out a pack of cigarettes, offering her one. She stared at it intently, then back up at him as he placed one between his lips. "Oh come on. You are so fucking suspicious of anything. Here, you pick one." He shoved the pack into her hands. She grabbed a random one, placing it between her lips. Even the slight taste made her nostalgic, made her feel so out of body for just a moment. He reached over, sparking his lighter as she inhaled deeply.
"You have any hobbies in life before all this shit?" He questioned. She didn't answer, just stared off as she took a long drag. "God, Red. I just want to get to know you!" He laughed wildly, "You would think with all the goddamn leverage I have against you that you could have the common fucking courtesy to answer a question!"
She glanced at him before answering.
"No. No hobbies. Unless you count drinking."
"That's my favorite one.... You work?"
"I was a bottle girl. I wanted to go to college."
"And you didn't because?"
"Because... Life caught up to me I guess. I was poor. I did a few semesters but the grants ran out and my pockets were dry."
"Your doctor fiancé didn't wanna finance you?"
She snapped her gaze to him, feeling her blood run cold.
"... What?"
"David, right?"
"How do you know about David?"
"I can tell by the look on your face he has been long forgotten." He grinned.
"Did Kay tell you?"
"You would be surprised what a little whiskey would do to your sister. Man she just starts spilling everything. She's never had men give her attention, I mean you can fucking tell. No, never had the eyes on her like you did."
Del swallowed the lump in her throat, puffing on the cigarette, wondering what else she had told him. Why? Why would she give him even more?
