-Start of Chapter 137-
Y/N's POV
The village is small, tucked between the river and the edge of the fog. Lanterns swing gently from wooden posts, their warm light spilling over stone paths and painted doors. Children laugh as they chase each other through the dusk, and a woman presses a basket of herbs into my hands with a smile that reminds me of home.
It's peaceful here. Quiet in a way the castle never was.
That night, Sunghoon and I stay in one of the cottages offered to us—simple but warm, with a single candle flickering beside the bed. The smell of woodsmoke lingers in the air.
As he helps me remove the last of my cloak, his fingers brush mine. "We've come far" he murmurs. "Tomorrow, the witch. After that... we'll have everything we need."
"Not everything" I say softly, thinking. "There's still... a Guardian's tears."
Sunghoon's eyes widen, the realization dawning fast. "A Guardian..." He looks toward the door, breath catching. "Sir Eidan."
Before I can respond, a knock sounds.
The door creaks open, and Sir Eidan steps inside, still in his worn travel cloak. "Forgive the intrusion" he says, smiling faintly. "I only wished to see if you found rest here. It's not the castle, I know... but it's full of people who still remember you."
His voice trembles on the last word. He lowers his gaze. "I have failed my duty, my prince. I was meant to protect you all—to guard the royal line as my ancestors did. Instead, I was exiled, powerless as you suffered."
"Sir Eidan..." Sunghoon starts, but the older man shakes his head, tears welling.
"I broke my family's oath" he whispers. "My father served your father, as his father did before him. And I—" His voice cracks. "I let the kingdom fall into shadows."
Before I can think, I'm already on my feet, reaching for him. "You didn't fail" I say quickly. "You survived. You kept faith when no one else did."
His tears finally fall—silvery drops glinting in the candlelight.
And that's when I realize—Sunghoon is no longer beside me.
"Sunghoon?"
He reappears in a flash of dark mist, holding a small glass vial that looks suspiciously like something he'd swiped from a shelf. Carefully, he tilts it under Sir Eidan's cheek, catching the falling tear.
"Yah!" I hiss. "He's crying, and you're collecting ingredients for the cure?"
Sir Eidan lets out a weak laugh, wiping his eyes. "No, no, Lady Y/N. Let him. If my sorrow can help restore what was lost... then perhaps my purpose was not in vain."
Sunghoon lowers the vial, sealing it shut with quiet reverence. "You've done more than you know, Sir Eidan."
For a moment, the three of us stand in silence—the candle burning low, the village night breathing softly beyond the walls.
