By sunrise, the city had begun counting what remained.
Emergency vehicles lined streets still littered with shattered masks, broken glass, abandoned weapons, and the wreckage left behind by the Faceless. Hospitals overflowed with patients who had awakened confused, bruised, and unable to explain what their own bodies had done. Families gathered behind police barricades searching for names, while rescue crews moved from building to building in case anyone remained trapped beneath collapsed floors or sealed behind webbed doors.
The laughter was gone.
That made the silence worse.
All Might stood beside a black limousine near the edge of the ruined district, one hand resting against the roof while he watched paramedics carry another unconscious civilian toward a waiting ambulance. In retirement, there was no costume beneath his coat, no hidden reserve of power waiting to transform his thin frame into the towering symbol the world remembered.
There was only the man once called All Might.
A tired man standing beneath a sky still dark with smoke, forced to witness the aftermath of a battle he had no way of stopping.
Years ago, he would have arrived before the streets filled with bodies. He would have torn through the Faceless, found the villain behind them, and lifted the panic from the city merely by being seen.
That was what people believed.
That was what he had taught them to believe.
Now he could only stand behind the barricades and watch others carry the burden.
A damaged bus rested on its side near the junction. The windows had been smashed outward, and several white masks lay crushed beneath one wheel. Farther down the road, firefighters worked around the remains of an apartment building where controlled civilians had fought one another until the structure gave way.
All Might's fingers tightened against the limousine.
If he had still been the Number One Hero, would this have happened?
The question had no fair answer, but it returned anyway.
Would Chameleon have dared spread his influence this far while the Symbol of Peace remained active? Would the Faceless have reached the hospitals? Would so many heroes have been stretched thin, uncertain who they were fighting or whether the civilians attacking them could still be saved?
He had once believed retirement meant passing the torch.
Lately, it felt more like dropping it in the dark and hoping someone found it before the city burned.
The distant rumble of engines pulled his attention toward the opposite end of the street.
A convoy of dark armoured vehicles passed through the police perimeter.
They bore no hero-agency insignia and no official emergency markings. Instead, each carried the silver Oscorp emblem across its doors. Soldiers disembarked in disciplined lines, wearing tactical armour and carrying medical packs, portable stretchers, water, and emergency supplies.
They did not move like rescue volunteers.
They moved like an occupying force that had practised looking helpful.
Some established temporary aid stations. Others guided civilians through the rubble and reinforced damaged structures. Mobile medical units opened along the pavement while drones rose overhead to search rooftops and collapsed buildings.
The response was fast.
Too fast.
All Might watched a group of soldiers lift a section of debris from an injured police officer while another scanned the area with technology far beyond standard emergency equipment.
