Ms Marvel's first jump carried her across the entire street.

Her second nearly sent her through a billboard.

She twisted in the air, stretched one arm towards the rooftop and caught the edge with an enlarged hand. Her body swung beneath it before she pulled herself up.

I landed beside her.

"You need to decide where you're landing before you jump."

"I did."

"You aimed for the billboard."

"I decided badly."

At least she admitted it.

We continued towards Brooklyn.

Ms Marvel couldn't move as quickly as I could, especially once JARVIS finished adjusting the armour to my movements. She made up for it by stretching across wider gaps and pulling herself between buildings.

The landings still needed work.

Every few rooftops, I slowed down to let her catch up.

It should have annoyed me. We had a possible bomb ahead of us and no idea how close it was to activating.

Instead, I found myself watching how she moved.

There was no real training behind it. She experimented with every jump, changing the length of her arms or legs depending on the distance. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes she landed in a heap and pretended she had meant to.

It reminded me of learning how to swing.

Most people imagined Spider-Man had stepped from his bedroom one morning and crossed the city without a problem.

They didn't see the walls I hit.

Or the time I misjudged the length of a web and landed in a river.

They definitely didn't see me limping home while trying to explain why there was a fish trapped inside my hoodie.

"Do you have someone teaching you?" I asked.

Ms Marvel stretched one leg towards the next building.

"No."

"What about another hero?"

"I haven't exactly told anyone."

"You're keeping this secret?"

"My parents would lose their minds if they knew."

She pulled herself across and landed beside an air-conditioning unit.

"I tried bringing up vigilantes at dinner once. My dad spent twenty minutes talking about how dangerous they were. My mother agreed with him and then somehow blamed the internet."

"Sounds familiar."

"Your parents don't know either?"

The question caught me.

I fired another web.

"It's complicated."

I swung away before she could ask anything else.

A sharp ache spread beneath my ribs as I pulled myself over the next building. It felt like something crawling under my skin, searching for a place that no longer existed.

My swing weakened.

JARVIS increased the assistance around my shoulder.

"Your heart rate is rising," he warned.

"I'm fine."

"Your recent medical assessment suggests otherwise."

"You read that?"
