The rear ramp opened above Manhattan.
Wind tore through the aircraft, swallowing the warning alarm and rattling every loose strap inside the cargo hold. Far below us, the city stretched beneath a layer of smoke.
There was no time to land.
The first confirmed New York bomb had started drawing power eight minutes ago.
A crew member hurried between us, checking the straps around Chui's descent rig before moving towards Peni's machine.
"Local heroes are already searching the city," the pilot continued. "Police have begun evacuations around the suspected locations. Your contact will meet you near the Brooklyn approach."
"Who is our contact?" Chui asked.
"Luke Cage."
Chui fastened the last strap around her descent harness.
"Good. Someone strong enough to catch me."
Peni climbed into S.P.//dr's cockpit.
The special spider rested inside its housing beside her, connecting her mind to the machine. The mech's eyes lit one after the other as its limbs unfolded from the cargo locks.
Peni stared through the open ramp.
She still hadn't said much since the briefing.
Chui fastened her helmet and checked the controls built into her wrists. The descent rig would guide her towards the marked rooftop without requiring her to steer through the city.
I stood inside the Spider-Armor while the final plates locked over my chest.
The silver mask sealed around my face.
A map appeared across the dark lenses, marking the drop zone and bomb location. The armour's motors hummed around my shoulders and legs, lifting some of the weight from my body.
It still felt like wearing a vault.
The aircraft banked sharply.
Buildings filled the open ramp.
A voice came through our helmets.
"Spider-Man, you will join the ground heroes and clear the terminal. Peni and Chui will enter only after the area is secure. Their objective is to locate the Trigger Bomb and disable it. Nothing more."
"Understood," I said.
Chui raised one hand.
Peni gave a small nod from inside the mech.
The crew member struck the release beside S.P.//dr.
The cargo locks opened.
Peni's machine charged down the centre of the aircraft and jumped.
For a moment, the enormous mech fell between the buildings.
Then thrusters fired beneath its body. Four mechanical legs spread wide as it dropped towards the marked street.
Chui stepped onto the ramp next.
She looked down once.
Her entire body stiffened.
I moved beside her.
"The rig will do the difficult part."
"I know."
"You only have to jump."
"That is currently the difficult part."
The warning alarm changed pitch.
