The old Avengers compound stood alone beyond the city.
Trees had grown across the road leading towards it. Weeds pushed through the cracked pavement while rusted barriers remained lowered across the main entrance.
The building was larger than I expected.
Several connected facilities surrounded a central tower, their dark windows facing the empty grounds. An Avengers symbol remained fixed above the entrance, although years of rain had washed most of the colour from it.
There were no lights.
No security.
Nothing to suggest one of the most advanced organisations in the world had once worked here.
Our transport slowed near the front gate.
Luke stepped out first.
Jessica followed him while Daredevil remained still near the doors, listening to the compound.
Ms Marvel moved beside me.
"This place is creepy."
"It's an empty building."
"Empty buildings can be creepy."
She pointed towards one of the upper windows.
"Especially when they look like they're watching you."
I looked up.
For a moment, I thought I saw something move behind the glass.
Then it was gone.
Peni guided S.P.//dr from the back of the transport. Chui climbed out behind the mech, holding the tablet connected to the secondary signal.
Her screen continued to point directly towards the compound.
"This is where the command came from," Chui said. "The signal hasn't moved."
Danny looked across the abandoned grounds.
"Why would the Avengers leave a facility like this?"
I glanced towards Daredevil.
"You know anything?"
Matt tilted his head, listening to the wind moving through the trees.
"The compound stopped being safe. Too many enemies knew where it was and how it operated. There was a breach several years ago that reached its lower systems. The Avengers removed what they could and shifted their operations west."
"What happened during the breach?" Ms Marvel asked.
"Most of the reports were sealed."
Jessica looked towards the broken windows.
"That usually means something went very wrong."
JARVIS spoke through my helmet.
"The compound was officially decommissioned. All sensitive information and active defence systems should have been removed."
"Should have been?" I asked.
"I have not been connected to this facility since its closure."
Luke placed both hands against the rusted barrier.
"Guess we're finding out what they missed."
He tore it from the road and threw it aside.
The crash echoed across the grounds.
Nothing responded.
We continued towards the main building.
Three Humarise vehicles had been abandoned near the entrance.
