New York did not fall all at once.
It lost one street at a time.
Grand Central had become the final evacuation route in Manhattan. Civilians disappeared beneath the terminal while the last heroes stood between them and Ultron's army.
SP//dr held the centre of the road.
Most of its white armour had been torn away. One arm hung uselessly at its side, and every warning inside Peni's cockpit had turned red.
She kept moving.
Bucky fired from behind an overturned bus. Luke Cage and Jessica Jones met the machines in the street while Danny Rand moved between them, his glowing fist burning through metal.
Chui fought beside them.
A cracked tablet had been strapped to her forearm. A cable stretched from it to the Ultron drone beneath her boot.
Pink code spread through its eyes.
"Thirty-eight percent!" she shouted.
The machine reached for her.
Chui tore the cable free, ducked beneath its arm and fired a pulse into its neck. Peni caught the drone with SP//dr's remaining hand and threw it into the next wave.
The explosion slowed them for three seconds.
Then more red eyes appeared through the smoke.
"How long?" Peni asked.
"Longer than we have!"
Ultron found Chui.
Every machine in the street turned towards her.
Red beams filled the road.
SP//dr stepped over Chui and crossed its damaged arms. The blasts struck the mech's back, melting armour and flooding Peni's cockpit with heat.
Pain tore through the neural link.
Peni screamed but held her ground.
Bucky shot two drones from the sky. Jessica tore another away from SP//dr and drove it through a car. Luke caught a heavy unit by the waist while Danny's fist punched through its chest.
Chui ran between them.
She slid beneath the falling machine, drove her cable into its broken armour and sent the virus deeper.
"Seventy-one!"
Ultron changed his attack.
Sonic weapons struck Danny first. The glow vanished around his fist as he fell.
Metal restraints closed around Luke and dragged him onto one knee. Jessica reached him before a beam threw her through the side of a building.
Bucky continued firing until the machines reached the bus.
Peni lost SP//dr's damaged leg.
The mech crashed onto one side. She forced its remaining hand against the road and dragged herself upright.
Chui remained in the open.
"Ninety-three!"
A drone came at her from behind.
She turned too late.
Bucky shot it through the eye before three machines buried him beneath them.
Chui caught the falling drone and forced her cable into its head.
"Ninety-eight!"
The army closed around her.
Peni pulled every remaining control towards herself.
