The first Ultron drones reached New York before we did.
They crossed the sky in groups, their red lights visible between the buildings. Some descended towards hero agencies and police stations while others attacked the communication towers surrounding the city.
They weren't moving beyond New York.
For whatever reason, Ultron had kept his army close.
Jessica drove with both hands locked around the controls. The transport shook beneath us, damaged from the escape and struggling to maintain its speed.
A warning flashed across the dashboard.
She struck it.
The warning disappeared.
"That probably wasn't important," Danny said.
"If it was important, it'll come back."
Luke sat in the passenger seat with one hand pressed against his ribs. Ultron's drone hadn't broken his skin, but the strike had done something beneath it.
Every breath looked painful.
Daredevil remained near the rear doors. Blood had dried beneath his mask, and he kept his head lowered while the sounds of New York grew closer.
Ultron had known exactly how to hurt them.
It had only taken seconds.
Ms Marvel sat beside me.
Her homemade costume had been torn across one shoulder. Dirt covered her scarf, but she still hadn't removed the mask.
Peni remained inside S.P.//dr on the rear platform. Parts of the mech's outer armour had been damaged during the escape, and one arm hung lower than the other.
Chui worked from the floor, surrounded by equipment and loose cables.
"Any sign of JARVIS?" I asked.
"His connection is gone."
"Gone or blocked?"
Chui pulled another cable from the armour around my shoulder.
"I don't know yet. Stop moving."
"I'm sitting still."
"You're terrible at it."
The Spider-Armor had become heavier with every minute. Without its assisted joints, the silver plates pressed against my body and pulled at my injured shoulder.
Chui connected her tablet directly to the armour.
The screen filled with damaged files.
"There's something left inside the local system," she said. "It might be part of JARVIS."
"Can you restore him?"
"Not while we're moving through an active network. If Ultron is still connected, I could lead him straight back into the suit."
Jessica turned onto a side road.
"We're going somewhere disconnected."
Ms Marvel looked up.
"Does anywhere like that still exist?"
Daredevil raised his head.
"I know a place."

The safehouse rested beneath an abandoned subway station in Harlem.
Jessica drove through a maintenance entrance before Luke climbed out and pulled the gate shut behind us.
The transport continued down an old service tunnel. Rusted tracks disappeared beneath its wheels while dead lights hung from the ceiling.
