Avengers Tower had been built to look untouchable.
Tonight, Ultron had turned it into a fortress.
Drones covered the outer walls like metal insects. Red beams swept across the empty plaza, passing over overturned cars, shattered windows and the remains of an Avengers monument. More machines guarded the loading entrance beneath the tower.
I watched them from behind a delivery truck while the plates of the Spider Armour Mk I settled around me.
The armour was heavier than my usual suit, but it was not some hulking machine I had to drag around. The plates followed the shape of my body. I could run, climb and swing without much trouble.
Usually.
I had entered New York running on whatever my body had left. My strength came in shorter bursts. My lungs burned too quickly. Even my Spider-Sense felt exhausted, each warning arriving as a dull spike behind my eyes.
The armour protected what I could no longer afford to take directly.
It also made every small weakness harder to hide.
Elektra crouched beside me, watching the loading doors.
"They open whenever one of Ultron's patrols returns," she said. "We will have seventeen seconds."
Moon Knight looked across the plaza. "Plenty of time."
Frank checked his rifle.
"For some of us."
I looked at him. "I can still swing."
"You've hit three walls tonight."
"Two walls."
"The bus counts."
"The bus moved."
Ms Marvel leaned around Daredevil. "Should the Marvel Knights have a proper signal?"
Frank glanced at her. "We have one."
The loading doors began to rise.
"Move."
Elektra crossed the street first.
I fired a web above the entrance and swung after her. The armour followed the movement without fighting me, but I felt the extra weight when I changed direction. My arc dipped lower than usual.
A red blast passed over my head.
Another struck the plate across my ribs.
The armour absorbed the heat, but the force knocked me sideways. I released the web, turned through the fall and landed in a crouch hard enough to crack the road.
Elektra glanced back.
"I meant to do that."
"No, you did not."
I jumped towards the first drone.
It raised its weapon.
I was not fast enough to slip around the barrel, so I did not try. I caught the blast against my forearm guard, drove through it and hit the machine with my shoulder.
Metal folded beneath the armour.
The drone flew through the loading entrance.
Elektra ran up my back before I had completely stopped. She jumped from my shoulder, turned over two more machines and drove both sais through the gaps beneath their heads.
I webbed their legs and pulled.
They crashed together as the others crossed the plaza.
Daredevil moved between red blasts without wasting a step. Moon Knight's crescent blades flashed around him. Ms Marvel enlarged one hand and swept a row of machines away from Frank.
