Issue 140 - Off the Record

Daredevil refused to stay behind.

Chui had cleaned the blood from beneath his mask and wrapped a bandage around his head. The damage to his ears would need more than a few hours to recover, but none of that stopped him from reaching for his batons.

Jessica blocked the tunnel.

"You can barely stand."

"I know where we're going."

"You can tell us."

"They won't speak to strangers."

Jessica glanced towards me.

"He knows you."

"I'm still a stranger to his contacts."

Ms Marvel raised one hand.

"I'm definitely a stranger."

No one argued with her.

Daredevil fastened the batons against his side.

"Ultron's communications network is growing stronger. We don't have time to bring everyone here one at a time."

Jessica looked as though she wanted to lock him inside the safehouse.

Instead, she stepped aside.

"You take Spider-Man and Ms Marvel. Stay underground for as long as possible. If things get worse, you come straight back."

Daredevil walked past her.

Jessica caught his arm.

"I mean it, Matt."

His expression softened slightly beneath the mask.

"I know."

Peni remained beside S.P.//dr.

She had removed part of the mech's damaged shoulder while Chui repaired the controls beneath it. Several broken plates rested around her feet, and the mech's left arm continued shaking whenever she tested it.

"You sure you don't want us?" Peni asked.

"You need to get S.P.//dr moving," I said.

"It is moving."

One of the mech's fingers twitched.

A loose plate fell from its arm and struck the floor.

Peni looked towards it.

"It's moving enough."

"We'll need more than enough when we go back."

Her hands stopped over the open controls.

I expected her to argue.

Instead, she stared at the damaged machinery.

"If we go back."

I moved closer.

"What does that mean?"

Peni kept her voice low.

"I don't know if I can do this."

Chui looked up from her tools.

After a moment, she moved towards the other side of S.P.//dr and gave us some space.

Peni sat on the edge of the maintenance platform.

"This is my first real mission. I thought I'd be locating bombs and helping disable them. That was terrifying enough."

She looked towards the tunnel Ultron's drones had forced us through.

"Now there's an Avengers-level threat trying to wipe out humanity. It knows how everyone fights, it has an army, and its body is made from something we can't break."
