Conan's POV

Ran rushed over to me, picking me up and spinning around gleefully. "You're alive, I can't believe it, you're ok!! I was so so so worried about you!!" Her grip hardened into a bear hug, tears streaming down her face. "Conan... Thank the heavens your safe..."

I gave her a weak smile. "Yeah, I'm fine... I'm..." My eyes wandered to the firefighters. They were everywhere. Who had called them?

I pushed the thought aside. Who cares how they got here.

"Conan, is something wrong? That person who kidnapped you! What did they do?!?! I swear, when I get my hands on them, they'll pay for every single sin they've ever made in their whole lives!! THEY'LL WISH THEY WERE NEVER BORN!!!!! Can you tell me who they are?! Where are they, I'll hit them so hard!!!"

Ran waited for an answer, and she got one, but not one she was expecting.

"They... they're in there..."

She followed me shaking hands to the rumble. The flames had finally been put out, and firefighters were debating on if anyone

could be inside. It had been thought to be abandoned, after all.

"I... I couldn't - " Ran hugged me again, trying to calm me down.

"Shhh... It's ok, Conan. I'm here. They're gone now. They can't hurt you anymore."

I wanted to tell her "But that's just it. They're gone. That's why I'm crying." but I didn't. She wouldn't understand. She'd never understand. Just like I will.

Is this how Rory always felt? Like no one would ever understand her no matter how hard she tried?

...

It doesn't matter now. She couldn't feel anything now anyways.

I cried into Ran's shoulder for a long time. The hug felt nice, but it couldn't help me now. Only time can tell.
