//Kai not knowing how to deal with the news that you have broken up with your boyfriend//

Decades? Centuries? Kai Parker had lost track of how long he'd been head-over-heels in love with you. Truth be told, it was only a year. Coincidentally; almost the same amount of time he'd known you.

After he escaped the prison world and all of the chaos and turmoil had settled upon his return to Mystic Falls, you were the first person to treat him with the human decency he knew he didn't deserve. The first person willing to give him a second chance.

That, along with nights filled with laughter and staggered gaits put into practice at the grill, was what led to the heretic understanding his feelings for you, and realizing that he needed you by his side.

However, there was one particularly irritating- as he would describe- factor that prevented him from making a move; your boyfriend.

Each time he saw you with your self proclaimed partner, his stomach would churn and his jaw would clench; his jealousy burning, and he attempted to hold it back.

In fact, it came to seem that he never saw you without him on your arm, which stirred the envy within his heart just that little bit more.

That was, well, until tonight.

You were in that stage of a break up where it was too soon to announce the split, but not soon enough to be totally over it.

But luckily for you, you were most certainly on a quick route to amends.  The Mystic Grill was serving as a trusty crutch, and your now ex-boyfriend? Well, the circumstances of the break-up made it much easier than you had anticipated to get over him.

But instead of jumping straight into a bittersweet celebration, you decided to take some time to think.

"Well well well," Kai quipped with a sly smirk as he strode over to set up camp on the barstool next to your own. "Look what the cat dragged in." He joked, propping his elbows against the bar and leaning his face against the palm of his hands dreamily as he smiled at you.

"Hey, Kai." You scoffed in underwhelming amusement, barely even lifting your gaze to meet him. Now, Malachai Parker was still new to emotions, and had only recently been reacquainted with social interaction, but he knew something wasn't right.

"What's wrong?" He asked suddenly-- arms lowering from the bar as he turned to face you properly. You sighed.

"You know Y/BF/N, right?" You asked, eyes still fixated on your drink.

"I know of him." Kai answered after a moment, visibly uncomfortable by the mere sound of his name.

"We broke up." You announced, your focus dedicated to swirling your drink around your glass. Kai's eyes instantly lit up and he could've sworn his heart was going a million miles a minute. He finally had his chance.

But, his celebration was cut short. And before he had a chance to smooth out the fabric of his shirt, sit up straight and think of something-- anything to say, you spoke up.

"He uh- he cheated on me." You revealed, managing a sarcastic smile as you finally met the gaze of the shocked heretic.

"He what?" Kai spoke suddenly, his grin fading instantly, "You're joking, right? You know I'm still new to this whole 'reading emotions' thing and that smile is really throwing me off." He queried uneasily. It was true that your grin made it hard for him to peg your sincerity-- but really, it was more that it proved concentrating the difficult task.

"As true as day." You confirmed, averting your gaze back to the bar top as you held back the tears you felt brewing. Kai pondered the scenario for a moment before he heard you sniffle.

"You're crying." He stated urgently, his focus solely on you.

"Yeah, I guess I am." You scoffed, lifting your head to wipe away the few stray tears that had escaped.

"He's an idiot, Y/N. Pease-- don't cry for him."

"No," You shook your head with a slight smile, "You're right-- he is an idiot. I don't care about him." You added, "it's just that, what does this mean about me? Am I not enough?"

Kai let out a laboured breath, managing to hold back his fury. You didn't deserve to be sad-- to be treated like so poorly.

"Listen to me," He began, grabbing your hands in his as you turned to face him. "You are more than enough. You are smart and funny and beautiful-- anyone would be blessed just to know you, Y/N." He continued. You smiled sadly at the heretic, strengthening your grip on his hands.

"And if I didn't know that you would hate me forever, I would have killed him already

"And if I didn't know that you would hate me forever, I would have killed him already." He added seriously. You giggled at this, looking away for a moment before finding his eyes again.

"Thank you, Kai." You smiled. He gave a small nod, pulling his lips in between his teeth as he let your hands go.

This time, it was you who noticed something in him.

"Hey," you began, regaining his attention. "What aren't you saying?"
He hesitated before replying.

"87% of me is saying that this is a bad time to tell you this, but if I don't I feel like my spleen might implode on itself." He began, raising an eyebrow as he pondered the possibility of his worry, "But-- I like you, Y/N. Like, like-like you." He confessed. "I have ever since we met."

You smiled at him, feeling something you couldn't quite pinpoint. A feeling you never experienced with Y/BF/N. Maybe your drink was kicking in, or maybe it was love; that, you didn't know.
But what you knew for certain, was that you were happy knowing that Kai had feelings for you, because you felt the same way.

"Ugh, god." Kai visibly cringed, "I sound like a 13 year old girl, I'm so sorry." You laughed at his antics.

"No-- it's perfect." You assured him, eliciting a bashful grin from the heretic. "In fact, I couldn't have said it better myself."
