Alaric was fed up.
Watching his best friend spend years hiding his feelings for the one person who truly made him happy, was aggravating to say very the least.
The Salvatore's brooding and complaining didn't make it any easier to tolerate either.

Whenever you were around- which was often- it was like Damon became a completely different person. Although, not at all untrue to himself, but rather; as if he would let his best qualities filter through.
He would smile, and laugh in your company. Two gestures not seen often in the elder vampire since the return of one, Lily Salvatore.
But he was afraid. Afraid of dragging you into a mess he couldn't clean up-- and afraid of the strength of his own feelings.
Because no matter how hard his smile would tug at his lips or how airless his lungs would become whenever he saw you, he refrained from making a move.

The parlour, as in its usual Saturday evening ambiance, was homing an almost-tipsy Alaric, and a thought-ridden Damon.
The two had been lounging around on the couch, pouring glass after glass of bourbon when the sound of footsteps padding down the stairs brought both men to attention.
They craned their heads over the back of the couch, looking to see who their company was.
Ric saw you first. And when he did, he rolled his eyes, downing the rest of his glass in one gulp. Not because he didn't like you- in fact, he thought you were great. But because he knew exactly how Damon would act now that you were there, and how he would have to endure it.
When Damon did see you, it took a moment for him to register your presence. How could he not have known you were under the same roof?
Without a moment to spare, he zipped away from his place on the couch and to a standing position by the liquor cabinet- fiddling around with the thick, glass bottles in an attempt to distract himself and seem busy.
The sound of your laughter reached the bottom of the stairs before you did, and it made Damon squint his eyes shut, almost painfully-- because no matter how bad he may have wanted to, he knew he would never be good enough to have you.
Caroline's giggles followed as she walked with you, which elicited an eye roll from the lovestruck vampire-- realizing she too, was accounted for.
