Three weeks ago we got the phone call, they asked us to perform and be the opening act. Of course without a shadow of doubt we gratefully accepted, proceeding to jump up and down as we planned it all out, from start to finish. We were Apollo, we were some small band that did gigs in bars, at small venues and never expected to be where we were today- having opportunities to tour the world, be known.
It started a few months prior to getting the big news, we were on our first world tour and it was insane. The amount of excitement, lack of sleep and pure joy to see thousands of people night after night sing along with us as we performed for them. On our third night in Germany, we were in Berlin exploring. None of us had been before and we were curious regarding the art, the atmosphere and the life there, all before we had even gotten to our venue. Caleb wanted to see the football stadium and Kieran couldn't help but agree leaving me and Soph to just follow them along with this.
Once we arrived the stadium was a lot bigger than I had expected. The guys acted like children in a toy shop, pointing to the field where the players play the game and they wander from seat to seat in the stadium whilst I walk around, earphones in and freezing cold, wanting nothing more than some warmth. Hearing my name being called I pull out one earphone, seeing Caleb motioning to the players locker rooms, sighing I was thankful to be someone else besides the bitter cold air that circled us now.
The guys continued to freak out as they saw the players tops and numbers, their names etched into the fabric along with some awards. Looking at the glass cabinet I saw the group photo, focusing on it so much I didn't even notice the reflection behind me. We started talking, I didn't even know who he was, part of me assumed he just worked on the grounds until Kieran silently freaked out and kept pointing to the guy and the framed shirt, '13′. Raising an eyebrow to Kieran the guy turned around in confusion before releasing a small sigh.
We spoke some more, things didn't change even though I learnt who he was. His name was Luke, originally an Australian football player but transferred to Germany, a member of the National team that I was oblivious to. We went for coffee, got to know each other more and I liked it, I liked how real he was. The stereotype of footballers I built in my head had been knocked down, taken apart as he sat across from me. I invited him to our show that night, he waited for us at the end to thank us.
Skip ahead a few months and here I am, phoning up my loving boyfriend to tell him the good news. Phoning him up was second nature now, sitting in my bus bunk I couldn't stop the smile that formed on my face as I heard that all familiar yawn on the other end of the line.
"Mornin." His voice was laced with sleep and sounded groggy, I couldn't help but chuckle in response as I looked outside, seeing how dark it was.
"Good evening." Turning around from the window I tucked myself back into the blanket to stop the shaking of my legs and tried to focus on his breathing rather than Soph celebrating as loudly as she can outside of my bunk. "I've got some exciting news for you." The excitement that was building up inside of me was breaking through, the need to scream and yell with joy to him was tempting but knowing it was too early for him to function I remained relatively calm.
"What's that them mhh?" My heart always sped up when he had a sleepy voice, he couldn't speak properly let alone focus on my words properly.
Biting back the smile I wore on my face I kept my voice calm and slow. "Oh we just got offered to be the opening act at the national game in Germany that's all." He mumbled a response, completely unaware of what it actually means and I wanted to laugh at his docile state. "I'll talk to you later about it, love you."
He continued to mumble and let out a yawn as he responded, "Love you too, bye." His voice trailed off as he said goodbye and hung up, I heard a laugh come from Caleb as I came out of the bunk, shaking my head.
