If Only: II

Closing my eyes I returned to her side. She was fast asleep, eyes screwed shut as she dreamt with less than peaceful expression on her face. Dreams were difficult, they were shut off from us leaving me unable to control or input on whatever scenario is occurring in her imagination. Placing my hand against her cheek I wanted to move her hair out of her face, unconsciously she brushed it aside letting me see each freckle that appear on her face.

Feeling a tap against my shoulder I open my eyes for the second time, going to argue with Calum I turn to see Graham, our leader. The expression on his face doesn't read pleasure like it usually does when he thinks about all his angels helping people on Earth. Instead he looks frustrated, and it's all directed right at me, singeing my flesh. Standing up I followed him as he walked away in silence, it was uncomfortable to say the least considering I used to be an angel who watched people walk off with Graham, knowing good never came from it.

His course of direction lead us to his office, where the furnishing was white, gold and silver. Indicating for me to sit on his silver chair he sat opposite me at his white desk in the golden chair. "Ashton, there's some things we need to discuss about your duties as a guardian angel." I cleared my throat, feeling nervous now that I could be stripped of my new found position.

"Have I done something wrong, sir?" My voice had little confidence in it, usually I was the bright one, full of life but being sat here now it has faded away like my thoughts of her.

Picking up a few files he looked through them, all remained quiet until he placed them back down with a small thud, causing me to jump. "Your human, Y/n is it?" I quickly nodded in response. He pulled a small smile as he stood up, walking around the space with ease. "You'll always remember your first human, their the one you make a connection with before all the others." He smiled to himself as he picked up a snow globe, turning it upside down then back to normal, seeing the snow flakes fall.

"Who was your first human, sir?" It was invasive. Not many discuss previous humans, we're not meant to risk distraction as we could do the wrong thing mistaking our current human for a past one.

Placing the snow globe down on the desk he resumed his seat, the smile becoming smaller. "Her name was Gracie, she was only 6 and troubled in a care home, so alone." The smile disappeared as his mind casted back, but quickly snapped out of it and back to the current situation. "But Ashton, we need to talk about Y/n." He cleared his throat before continuing, "She is one of our rare cases where things are very severe, the little things we can do from up here isn't deemed as effective. What I'm about to ask of you has only occurred few times within the existence of guardian angels." Letting out a shaky breath my wings shivered behind me with nerves.

"Anything. I'll do anything to help her." I stated and he nodded.

"I thought as much." He agreed before standing in front of me. "We need you to go to Earth and help her, convince her she will be alright in the end. Anyway you can, just don't let her know the truth about you."

My mind drew blanks every time I tried to find words or anything to say or how to respond. All he could do was let out a soft chuckle at my state, I would be on Earth, I'd be where she is, I could speak to her. "What if she doesn't want to know me?" Doubt crosses my mind, I've never spoken to her, she hasn't met me. I might not be good enough for her, she might ignore me or not want to know me. "How do I convince a stranger to keep their head up in life all alone?" Speaking my thoughts aloud Graham spread his wings far and wide.

Due to Graham's position and age above all of us it means his wings are bigger and more powerful. His feathers had frayed from his years and the pure white has discoloured to grey, except few feathers seemed a different colour entirely. "You see these feathers here?" He pointed to the different ones, "Each of these gold or silver feathers is an honour from Head Office." He motioned above us, further in the clouds where we couldn't go without being asked. "They represent those I've helped, each feather for each human over my years. Some of them weren't in such a great need as others, but Gracie was my first. With Gracie I spent years watching over her, then eventually she realised she could be alright once she found herself a new family, I was honoured a golden feather." He motioned to the single rich feather amongst the bleak.

"Golden is the highest honour?" I asked and he shrugged, causing me to be confused.

"Few angels receive golden feathers but it may have happened, still could happen." He explains as he brings his wings back in, causing them to disappear behind his back. "You'll have to pay a visit to Head Office before you go. They're expecting you and will explain how things work for you on Earth. Just a run through of your days as at night you'll be brought back here." With that I find myself in a different room no sooner than Graham finished his sentence.

The air felt lighter and my wings felt cleaner, looking around the entire floor was pristine clouds and an angel sat behind a desk on the phone, assuming she was a receptionist. As I went to stand up a force pushed me back down, unable to move as I wished I remained still until I was to be called upon.

"Ashton." Turning my head I was now in a formal office, three angels sat before me with all golden wings and smart uniforms. The one in the middle, a lady was in charge and either side to her were two men of a similar age to herself. "Isn't it your lucky day?" She joked and I remained quiet, unsure how to respond to such a high authority figure. "In ten minutes you will be on Earth where your human is. You will be placed as close as we can get you to where she is and you have to meet her. Do what you must but you need to know her, she needs to know and learn to trust you as human Ashton, not Angel Ashton." I nodded as she explained as various ideas circled in my mind. "Do not stand out, keep calm. Whenever you're ready to come back after each day all you have to do is let us know and you'll return to your room. Understand?" She asked and all I did was nod.

A small smile casted over her face as the man on her right looked straight into my eyes. With a blink everything changed, all of the White, gold and silver pristine rooms were gone, a strong odour filled my nostrils causing me to gag and loud noises hurt my ears.

People passed me by and I couldn't help but let out a laugh, looking around to see I was on Earth, on an actual street with real people. I wanted to say hi to each and everyone of them but many focused on their phones or the floor, not many spoke to each other but to their devices instead. Plenty barged past me without an apology, but one that passed didn't hurt like the others, instead it was a spark.

She continued walking until she went inside a shop, one I saw her go into everyday for her usual hot drink which she takes to the corner of the room and sits alone in the booth. I watched her accept her drink and sit down, out of sight. Ideas circled in my mind and I reached into my pocket to find money, I ordered whatever she had as it was the only thing I knew. Once it had been given to me the cup was hot and began to burn my hand, with a quick pace I walked over to where she was.

There she was, plugged into her phone and reading a book, completely unaware of my existence. Seeing her like this, with all the noise and actual smells around me was surreal, she glanced up and I held my breath as her eyes landed on mine. Pulling something from her ears she raises an eyebrow as I widely smiled to her, unsure of what else to do.

"Can I help you?" She sounded so apprehensive and I momentarily forgot everything. My ability to speak, think and even blink. The whole time she looked perplexed as I stood unable to do anything.

As soon as her gaze parted mine I could breath again, my use of my body returned and I sat down opposite her, hearing a loud sigh escape her. "Hi, I'm-"

"I'm not interested." She cut me off and I furrowed my eyebrows together.

"I was only saying hello." My tone became less joyful, this wasn't how I pictured it going at all.

Silence loomed around the two of us as I looked outside, seeing all sorts of people pass by. Children with parents, friends, old people, boyfriends, girlfriends, animals, strays all variations of life. Yet in here it felt so dead, as if all the life had been drained and poured outside, trapped outside of the glass. Taking a sip at my drink I immediately spat it back out, the liquid burned my throat and was sickly sweet causing a loud shriek from Y/n opposite me as she gave me the most disgusted face she could conjure.

"I am so so sorry. Here, let me get some napkins." I rushed to grab as many as I could as I saw the brown stain on her white top. She fusses it off and picks up her things, including her drink and walks off. Leaving me stood there until she passes the window, moving her hair out of her face and I can see how flustered she is.

"Maybe this'll be a lot harder than I thought."
