Rushing around the corner of the street I paused to catch my breath, looking down to my phone seeing how late I was. Sighing I persevered through my shaky breathing and within a few minutes I saw the sign. 'Penelope's Pets' written on a small sign that hung by the shop, before I came to the shop I straightened myself up. I wiped under my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to seem like I was together.
As I walked into the shop I was greeted with the usual sounds of barks and meows, making my way past the pet essentials and some of our smaller animals and past reception, out to the left hand side where I keep my belongings during the day. I hung my coat up and placed my name badge onto my blue polo shirt, engraved with the shops name. I made my way further back to see all of the dogs and I was not disappointed when I saw all of their tails wagging and the barking becoming louder as I greeted each of them.
"Hey guys, did you miss me?" I asked giving Hev a tickle under her chin, she was one of the older dogs who I've known since I began working here, once I have enough money for definite I will adopt Hev.
For a while I do my usual jobs whilst we have no customers, I get the animals their food and monitor the new litter of puppies and kittens. Usually I focus on the puppies and Jen, my co worker and boss looks after the kittens. As I walk to the puppies I crouch down into their space, letting them climb up and chew on my laces. The litter were Labradors of all different colours, one in particular stood out to me amongst the rest for being a bit different. I call him Raff, short for Rafael his short coat of chocolate brown fur and his little ears being too big for him, making him slightly clumsy.
I heard the shop bell ring, I motioned to get up but Jen appeared, "I'll get it don't worry." She smiled and I thanked her, continuing to play with the puppies.
Whilst I stood up to get them some more water I heard my phone ring and quickly answer it, "Okay you know I'm working." I started, moving to the far corner in the back of the shop, trying to remain out of sight. "What's up Ash?"
"I was just wondering if you were working today, and it seems like my question has been answered, see you shortly." He said chuckling then hung up.
Me and Ash go way back, as to a time when I was 4 and he was 6, we've always been best friends and helped each other through a lot of events in our lives. He is the one who helped me get this job in the first place knowing my love for animals and all, he usually comes in once a week just to see me and check on me when he can, since he's usually busy with his new band.
Jen wishes a customer a good afternoon before coming back to check on the kittens, "So, lover boy is coming in today?" She joked and I rolled my eyes. Jen always assume we are a couple, always has done except I never think of Ash in a romantic way, he will always remain as my dorky best friend.
"Y/n!" I let out a sigh placing the water bowls down for the puppies and made my way through the shop to the counter, seeing Ashton walking up to me with a toy chicken. "Fancy some lunch?" He joked and I rolled my eyes, placing the chicken back where it belongs, but as I did so I noticed Ash wasn't alone.
Standing by the collars and leads was another guy, around the same age with dark brown hair, a slight tan and fiddled with the display of leads, knocking them all down. "Shit, I'm so sorry." He exclaimed picking them up. I quickly moved to help him out, putting them back where they belong.
"No don't worry about it, this happens a lot it's a flimsy display." I chuckled hoping to ease him a bit, he turned his head and glanced my way, as he did so I felt my cheeks warm up. Damn, he was cute.
His brown chocolate eyes which started to melt my insides, he placed the last collar onto the hook and straightened himself up. I turned back around as I began to hear barking.
