Stormy Night

The rain began to lash down as we came out of the card shop, with nothing to keep us dry we ran towards his car, luckily it wasn't parked too far away.

Mid way I began to pant and signalled that I'll walk, but instead he held out his hand and hugged me as we walked the last yards toward his car and held out the door for me as I got inside and buckled in.

Drenched from rain head to toe, my mascara ruined and the remains being half way down my cheeks, I turned to him pulling a sad face. His response was a mere laugh as he wiped my face in attempt to remove the black smudges with little luck. "You still look beautiful to me." He smiled and leaned in to kiss me.

"You're lucky you're cute." I spoke up, "Sometimes." I muttered under my breath as he started the engine. The loud exhaust sounded muting the pattering raindrops for a brief moment before they came back sounding more aggressive than when we got inside.

As he pulled out of the space I lent my elbow on the window ledge and aimlessly watched the sky above us changing dramatically. The previous blue skies we had experienced when we came out this morning had become unrecognisable. Baby blue I associated with relaxation and a sense of joy had been replaced by a depressing shade of grey; not a calming grey or one you could think of as non threatening, oh no, this was lethal, intentionally dangerous. The clouds swarmed over any light that had previously existed shading all the roads and pavements. The atmosphere had changed in the short space of time making it feel more like an early winters evening as opposed to a spring afternoon.

We drove home in silence both knowing what was approaching, a sense of worry was radiating between the two of us as I brought my legs to my chest and rested my heels on the edge of the seat. I reached forward to the radio but before I could press the on button he interrupted me.

"Please," He stated not taking his eyes off of the road ahead, even from this angle I could see the nerves that flashed in his eyes as the lighting changed through the tunnels. "Can't we just enjoy the quiet?" I retracted my hand and linked it to my left one, keeping my legs in place and silently sighed.

Before we reached home my ears perked up, I could hear the low rumbling of the thunder approaching causing my breath to become shallow. My eyes darted to Michael who remained solely focused on the road ahead, wiping the windows and hearing the rubber screech across the glass.

The closer we got home the more thunder we could hear, goosebumps appeared on my arms as the fear crept in. I could see our house and was itching to get inside and shut ourselves away before the storm hits.

No sooner than Michael parks I burst out of the door and run straight to the shelter above our front door. Impatiently I shuffle on my feet waiting for Michael to lock the car, seeing the rain lashing down on him but he tries to seem unphased by it all.

"Mikey!" I yelled to him as I hugged myself, trying to stop the shivers which was a mixture of coldness and fright. "We've got to get inside." My tone change and I was now pleading, I held onto the door handle and shook it up and down trying to release all of the fear that was bottled inside of me at this point as the thunder continued to rumble, getting closer and closer as the wind picked up.

He quickly walked towards me sensing my anx and unlocked the door eagerly. Once the lock unclicked I rushed inside without hesitation and ran straight up the stairs.

As I reached the bedroom I turned off all of the switches and pulled out all of the plugs just to be on the safe side. By the time I had finished I let out an apprehensive sigh, still running my hand up my arm as I paced in front of the large window overlooking our neighbourhood.

The entire sky that I could make out had become darker, more menacing. Our window was covered in raindrops, some of them hit the window with such force whereas others merely spat down. Some of them connected together and moved across the window in the direction of the wind, whilst those remaining solo kept a steady pace and moved parallel to other solo drops. I continued to watch the droplets and zoned out for a while until I was disturbed by an intense roar from the sky above and I took a few steps away from the window.
