As I shut my door I heard some commotion from my neighbours place followed by a crash and someone quickly slamming the door. Raising an eyebrow to the half dressed stranger he turned around, breathless and half heartedly waved. Slipping his top over himself I locked my door, allowing him some privacy if he wanted to keep some form of dignity.
"Hi." A raspy morning voice greeted me as I turned around picking up my bag and headed down the stairs with him hot on my tail.
Glancing back I saw him hurrying after me so I slowed down to his pace until he was by my side. "Hey, good night?" I raised an eyebrow to him knowing exactly what was up.
Nina, my neighbour in apartment 5C, she liked flings as much as she enjoyed a drink- might I add she was a reforming alcoholic when we first met. I never minded her one night stands, always an interesting walk to work when I left in the morning now and then plus she is a complete sweetheart. Except this one didn't seem convinced.
A light chuckle followed as he scratched the back of his neck and moved his blonde hair out of his eyes, clearly uneasy about such a taboo topic. "She was, erm certainly something." He struggled to find his words and all I could do was nod. Thankfully I lived opposite, not next door meaning I don't get to be considered lucky enough to hear her at it with someone all night long.
"Did you exchange names?" This was always interesting to know, Nina sometimes gave false names to ensure she isn't pestered. Yet to my surprise he shook his head.
"No names. That was the deal." Pausing I couldn't help but be intrigued by this one, his stormy blue eyes that suggest trouble, something about him was just different to the others. No offence to the rest but this one has, charm, not banter.
"On the plus side if you ever meet at a party you don't have to explain how you know each other, just act like mere strangers." He chuckled at that proposal as we neared the exit to the building.
A gentle breeze was inviting after the stuffy staircase, the wind weaved through my hair and wrapped itself around my neck. Smiling to myself I glance back to the stranger who hovers by the entrance, looking like a lost pup. "You got somewhere to be?" I asked as I took a step back towards him.
He observed the area, then the grey sky above. Today it would rain, I just know. "I, I don't think so. Where you headed?"
"Into town, got a few errands to run before work." Adjusting my bag on my shoulder I shift the weight from one leg to the other. We both stand there in silence as cars go by, I try to avoid his eyes but they seem locked on me. "I, I better get going." Smiling to him half heartedly I stepped backwards sending him one last wave until I went round the corner feeling disheartened.
As I continued to walk I felt a cloud form over my head, my personal cloud of despair. I could've got to know him, asked his name at least since Nina will have no idea. Maybe this stroll could have used some company- "Wait!" A loud shout alerted me as I froze on the spot, like it would be for me.
Turning around slowly there he stood, the blue eyed stranger with a sweet smile on his face. "Guess you haven't got anywhere to be if you're walking with me?" I joked as we walked along the street together nearing the train station, unsure where this could go.
"So, I'm Luke by the way." He held his hand out to me as we walked and I shook it, telling him my name as we awkwardly held hands, yet neither one of us wanting to be the first to let go. "You're probably wondering why I'd have a one night stand right?" He asked, clearly not expecting an answer anytime soon.
"Actually, no." I stated and he stopped in his tracks, his eyes not leaving mine. "She has an allure, it's common for her to draw in men and trust me you aren't the first." Joking with him he remained quiet. "You know what you're getting yourself into when you agree to a one night stand, no information is exchanged and if it is you don't use it." We continued to walk but he seemed stunned.
"You seem to know an awful lot." He raised an eyebrow to me and I quickly shook my head, laughing loudly in response.
"Oh please, as if I would. She happens to be a good friend of mine so I just get to hear her tactics and stories now and then. You'll probably be baby blue." I motioned to his eyes and he blinked seductively to me, making me smile.
Nearing the train station we just spoke about ourselves, never before had I opened up to one of Nina's one night stands but this seemed different, more genuine. So much for it being just a walk. Sighing loudly as the breeze picks up into a gust of wind I regret not bringing a jacket, I wrap my arms around myself as my umbrella does little to help in this weather. So much for the rain.
"Here." He slips his jacket off much to my protests but before I can say anything else the warm denim covers my upper half and I can't ignore the musk that laces the fabric.
Smiling up to him he seems relaxed, completely different to the stranger I met half an hour ago who was utterly flustered. "Thank you Luke."
As we got to the train station and stepped inside he looked up at all of the screens, all of the possibilities and opportunities each place has to offer. Yet instead he sighs loudly and focuses on the ground, the dirt from various shoe owners over the years, I doubt this is ever cleaned. "Listen, would you like to get coffee, once you finish work?" He suggested, reframing himself as he tried to ask quietly, but I could barely hear him with the trains coming by.
"Sorry what?" I asked as I motioned to the trains, raising my voice.
He coughed lightly and I could see how uncomfortable he was, all to my own amusement. "Would you like to get coffee with me?" His voice was louder this time, I understood him perfectly. But I wasn't done messing with him.
Lifting my hands up I shrugged my shoulders, trying to hold back the smile. I knew the train would soon be gone, but why not have a laugh. "DO YOU WANT TO GO OUT WITH me-" Luke yelled at the top of his lungs just as the train left, and his words echoed making me laugh uncontrollably.
People stared in our direction before resuming their busy lives, it wasn't going to be some cliche moment where everyone pauses to observe the boy gets the girl moment. It seems far from it. "Yeah, sure." I spoke, normal volume.
With his head kept down I could see his cheeks rising, "Listen here's my number, give me a call at say 4?" I wrote it down and passed it to him.
Lifting his head up he happily accepted it and then patted his pockets for his phone. Eyes going wide I raised an eyebrow, confused to his act of desperation. "Shit." He muttered and continued to as he patted various pockets and then the jacket I was wearing, ending up wrapping his arms around my waist.
"Not today Luke." Moving his arms off of my waist he held them up in front of himself. "What are you looking for?" I ask as he holds his head in his hands, groaning loudly.
"I forgot my phone." He muttered and I remained quiet, trying not to giggle at his stupidity.
"That's what happens when you leave in a hurry." I joked with him as the next train came, knowing it was mine. "Look, best of luck getting your phone back and when you do, give me a call." Waving to him I got into the train along with the other busy commuters, leaving him dumbfounded holding my number.
As I glanced at my own reflection I swore under my breath, I was still wearing his jacket. Motioning to it I shrugged, making him silently laugh through the glass. Taking a seat I pulled my phone out as the train left the station and sent Nina a message, warning her that her one night stand would soon return.
'and how do you know about this?'
'it was just a walk Nina, and a coffee later.' Smiling to myself as I put my phone away I could see the rain splash against the windows, the clouds becoming darker. See? I was right about one thing, that today it would rain.
