Obi Kwathar groaned loudly, bumping her pillow with her fists as her alarm wouldn't stop throwing its chiming noise off. She opened those lazy eyes of hers as she reached out to put an end to her tormentor.
"I'm up...just keep quiet!" dragging her body out of bed alongside the blanket, she yawned as she went into the bathroom for a pee. It was Monday and she must make a good thing out of it. She took a short look at herself in the mirror on the bathroom wall, reminiscing on the event that occurred last weekend. The proposal. It was her ever perfect moment.
Her kinky afro was a little messy but no worries, conditioner and hand dryer would do. She raised her left hand to check the silver circle around the third finger and that sight made her smile. She couldn't wait to hear the gossips that Mide Gentry finally proposed to her. Her weekend had been cheesy with their friends cheering them up during the proposal. And it happened after several battling emotions not to lose the friendship they have. Mide was not the persistent one, he had watched from afar how she dated several men and lend that helping hand whenever they left her heartbroken. He was there when that one breakup out of those many tore her apart, Harrison left her without looking back and Mide was there telling her she deserved better and helped in moving on. Mide had started working with Klerg Refinery when two years after it was opened and her stubbornness that she was not as qualified as people who struggled to get in made her waste two more years of jumping one petty job to another after her NYSC. Mide did not back down till she gave in and her employment did not surprise her since he had connections. Then one thing led to another that she started asking herself why she did not see what was in her front early enough. Maybe, just maybe her life would have been better. Maybe she wouldn't have gone through that particular breakup... but she would have never met her fiance. Well then she was just 22, coming December she would be 25 and she wasn't late after all to leave the spinsterhood gang.
Her phone rang on the dressing table so she took off the blanket that was wrapped around her, threw it on the bed as she took the phone.
'LOL'. Talk of the her mischievous friend that planned the proposal without her smelling it.
Lola Coker who she loved calling Lol became her second best friend after she secured a job at Klerg. She was hospitable and filled her in most of the things she needed to know when she resumed in January. Just that sometimes Lola could be annoying and naughty but Obi never got tired of her.
"Hey morning." Lola was shrieking on the other end.
"Lower your voice, morning. How was your night?"
"Fine. I thought you might still be dreaming of Mide's proposal that you already forgot today is Monday."
"Why are you shouting like that?"
"Oh...it's Shile that suddenly came in with his dog. I mean who give his bae who is allergic to dogs such surprise early in the morning. Back off!"
That was her friend. Talking to someone else while still on the phone with her. "Dogs are good...especially if you have a cute one."
"Look at who is talking o. do you even own one?"
"Lol I know you are dressed up for work while I'm just struggling to brush my teeth here."
"You better drag your idibalabala (big ass) out. Mide might not be able to save you this morning. I heard two teams arrived last night to assess some shortcomings... Shile abeg get this thing out of here!"
Obi held the phone between her left ear and the shoulder as she put toothpaste on her toothbrush. "I thought it has been cleared two weeks ago. People are expecting promotions."
"Actually there will be some evaluations again but instead of listening to me break the news why not hurry to the office and let us see things for ourselves."
