Millie looks down at her phone once more, hoping that she had just missed a text from Jacob, telling her he was running a bit late. But her phone remained without a text.
"Would you like to order now, Miss?" The waitress asks for the third time, casting a pitiful look at Millie. Millie sighs, turning her phone off. "No, I'm sure he's coming, he's just running a bit late." Millie states, trying to hold onto that small bit of hope that he was stuck in traffic or something.
30 minutes pass, Jacob had still not shown up yet. He was over an hour late. The waitress had come by 3 more times, each time her voice had gotten more and more sympathetic. People came and went and people had started staring at the young girl who they noticed has been there the whole time, clearly waiting for someone who was not coming.
"Are you sure he's coming?" She gently asks, feeling pity for the young girl. "Yeah..." She sighs, not even sure herself.
Just then, a young boy, around Millie's age rushes to her table and sits down, frantically apologizing. "I'm so so so sorry, babe. I got stuck in traffic." He apologizes loudly, addressing the others who were staring at the young girl.
They turned back to what they were doing, seeing as her date had showed up. The waitress smiles, and gives him a menu. He smiles back, and when she walks away, he leans to her.
"Just go with it." He whispers to her, smiling gently at her. "What's your name, love?" He gently asks, and she smiles, glad she didn't look like an idiot anymore.
"Millie." She says, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "I'm Finn. Whoever stood you up is an idiot for ditching a beautiful girl like you." He whispers, flipping through the menu. She blushes, looking back down at her menu.
The rest of the date was spent with them learning things about each other, and Millie felt grateful that Jacob stood her up, because she wouldn't have met Finn if Jacob had been a good person.
"So who's the jerk who left you?" Finn asks, as he had offered to walk her home. "His name is Jacob. We've gone on a few dates, and he's always late to them." She sighs, glumly looking down at her feet as they walked, embarrassed.
"Well something must be really wrong with him to not appreciate you." He says, before slipping his hand into her, intertwining their fingers.
She nods, nervously staring at their hands.
"Well this is my house." She says, when they had arrived. He nods, hands still locked with hers. "I had a great time." She says, looking deeply into his bright brown eyes. He looks back, cheeks tinted with a light pink color. He runs his free hand through his curly dark hair, nervously biting his lip.
"Y-Yeah. Me too." He stutters, and she smiles. "Can I... can I get your number?" He shyly asks. She nods, and puts her number into his phone, and he smiles softly at her.
"I'll call you." She says sweetly, kissing his cheek. He smiles, and begins walking away, Millie is about to open her door, when she stops. She turns around, and calls to Finn.
He stops, turning around and meeting her eyes. "Yes, Millie?" He asks, hands in his jean pockets. "Would you like to... go on an actual date?" She shyly asks, glad he couldn't see her blush.
"I'd love that." He smiles, and she bites her lip. "Goodbye Millie." He says, smiling before walking away. He grins to himself, as he crosses the street.
She smiles, opening the door and walking inside. She rushes to her room and texts Finn the details.
And she suddenly felt a sense of gratitude to Jacob. But she knew she had just met someone better.
