"It's okay baby, shhh.." Millie coos, bouncing Hayden on her leg as Finn continues to keep his grip on the steering wheel. Millie continued to whisper to her one year old son, Hayden, as he had been crying for the past few minutes.
It seemed that nothing would calm him, and they had tried just about everything. Finn's singing, Millie's rocking, toys, his favorite song, and just physical contact. All attempts had no avail; only causing tension and frustration to rise between the couple.
Millie's honey eyes begin to cloud with tears as she continues to attempt quieting Hayden. She hoped to smooth him enough that he would fall asleep, but her patience was running low and her motherly anxiety was rising more and more.
She gently pulls Hayden instead to her chest, rocking him gently. His cries are muffled by her sweater, and the couple could almost swear they lessened.
"How much longer?" Millie croaks, her eyes still brimming with tears.
"Only about 11 minutes," Finn replies, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "Have you tried singing yourself?" he suggests, making a right on the long road.
"Yes. We both have. We even tried his favorite song, but nothing!" Millie and Finn had both tried singing multiple songs during Hayden's fit. Finn had sung I Melt With You, Millie had sung I'll Be Watching You, and they both had tried singing Can't Help Falling In Love With You together; but like all attempts before, it didn't quiet their baby.
Many wails, tears (not just Hayden's) and attempts of quieting the baby later, they arrived at Finn's parents house.
Finn steps out first, and walks quickly to the trunk, extracting the bag of essentials for Hayden. The bag wasn't huge, but it definitely contained more than what met the eye.
Millie steps out after, still holding Hayden in her arms, bouncing and trying to calm him.
Finn wraps an arm around Millie's waist, and leads them to the door of his parents house. Finn knocks loudly, not just to make sure his parents hear him, but to make sure he can over Hayden's now screams.
Millie lets a few tears trickle down her face as she began frantically bouncing Hayden.
The door opens, and Eric and Mary's smiling faces dropped in concern of the screaming child, crying mother and strained father.
"Hey mom, hey dad." Finn says tensely, running his hand comfortingly on Millie's back.
"Aw, poor Millie," Mary frowns, and lowers her voice to Millie. "I could take him off your hands for a little bit." Mary offers, her warm eyes inviting Millie.
"I don't want to burde-"
"It's not trouble at all, sweetheart." Eric interrupts, as Mary nods. Sighing, Millie gently hands Hayden to Mary and Eric.
Almost immediately, Hayden begins to cough out the last of his tears. Mary strokes his forehead, and after a few hushed assurances and strokes, Hayden falls silent.
"How did you?" Finn asks in awe, watching as his son takes small and quiet breaths.
"You weren't much different." Eric teases, winking at his son.
"Now, come in, you seem to have had a long drive and I'm sure Hayden didn't ease it much." Mary says gently, making way for the exhausted couple to enter.
