A loud growling noise echoed through the small coffee shop as Nina turned on the grinder to get prepared for the day ahead. Her caramel eyes looked out the big glass windows and saw how dark it was outside from the early morning and the low Seattle clouds drizzled rain on the chilly morning.
A yawn escaped from Nina's mouth while she continued prepping for the day since she could optimize the first hour when the shop opened since there weren't very many people walking into the coffee shop at five in the morning. She was surprised to so quickly be proven wrong when the little bell above the door ran, alerting her to someone coming into the shop.
Nina turned around and saw two police officers walking in wearing their navy blue uniforms while a beautiful german shepherd trotted along next to them. Both of them had their shirts buttoned up almost to the top with just a little bit of a black tee shirt showing. The shirts were pressed neatly and tucked into their straight pants secured around their waists with a shiny belt with a gun holstered at their side. Both of them walked with their shoulders squared and upright posture as they approached the counter.
"Morning," The blonde officer smiled before looking around for the older gentleman who he was used to seeing, "Where's Chuck?"
"Chuck actually retired," Nina informed the two men.
"What? Oh no, we're going to miss him!" The blonde went on. "I can't believe he retired without telling us!"
The other officer who was standing behind the blonde finally took a step up and Nina was caught off guard by his voice that was low and comforting, making Nina feel warm from the inside out. She brought her eyes over to take him in. He was tall and very well built with wide shoulders and she could see his long sleeves being pulled across his thick biceps, letting her know that he was as muscular underneath that uniform.
Her eyes traveled up to his face and saw his squared jaw covered in sexy stubble, soft dark brown hair that was pushed off to the side and a pair of ocean blue eyes. His eyes were kind, gentle and thoughtful, but his mouth had a soft smirk that let Nina know there was some mischievousness there too. There was no doubt that he was handsome but she didn't have time to keep admiring him because he replied to the previous statement and added, "Yeah, we've been coming here every morning for a year and Chuck doesn't even tell us he's leaving!"
"Well, he had surgery and was off all last week and made the decision during that time to not come back," Nina explained.
"Aw, well we're going to miss him," The blonde told her. "So are you the one who is going to be here in the mornings now?"
Nina nodded while tucking one side of her short chocolatey hair behind her ear, "Yeah, I'm the new manager. I used to work at the location in Ballard, but they promoted me and moved me here after Chuck retired."
"Well, welcome to downtown Seattle," The handsome brunette smiled at her in a way that made her stomach tie in a knot. "I'm Chris by the way. Chris Evans"
Nine reached over the counter to shake his warm hand and told him, "Nina Wilson... it's nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you, Nina," Chris gave her that megawatt smile again.
"I'm his partner Jake Davis," The blonde introduced himself and Nina shook his hand as well.
Nina then looked down at the german shepherd who was obediently sitting upright and attentive at Chris' feet and asked, "And who is that handsome one?"
"This is Sergeant, we call him Serge," Chris patted his head. "He's been with with me ever since he was a puppy. He's the best partner I've ever had."
"Except for me of course," Jake piped in.
Chris just looked at the dog before looking at Jake and chuckled, "Nah, Serge is still the best."
Nina and Chris laughed while Jake just made a face before Nina got their orders and went over to the machine to make them. The officers went over to sit at their usual table in the small coffee shop after paying and got comfortable while Chris gave Serge the hand motion that he could lay down on the cool tile floor.
"I'm going to miss Chuck, I sure did love hearing his stories," Jake started up. "But Nina seems nice... pretty too."
"Yeah I guess, I wasn't really paying attention," Chris brushed it off.
Jake tipped his head back and laughed before leaning toward Chris and speaking softly so that their words wouldn't travel, "Don't even lie. I saw you giving her the once over."
"No I wasn't," He retorted.
At that moment, Nina walked over with a beautiful smile on her face and two white cups in her hands as she approached their table and said, "Alright, a mocha for Officer Davis, and an americano for Officer Evans."
"Ah, heaven in a cup," Jake was happy to take the cup from Nina and take a long drink, making her laugh at his exclamation.
"Thank you Nina," Chris kindly smiled as he took the white cup in his big hands before looking up into her caramel eyes that were warmer than his coffee. "And please, call me Chris."
"Alright Chris," She sweetly replied, her pink lips curling into a soft smile as the two shared a look. "Well, enjoy your coffee and please let me know if I can get either of you anything else."
As Nina turned to walk back to go behind the counter, Chris couldn't help but let his blue eyes wander to watch her and look at her beautiful frame. Jake watched his partner's eyes looking at every gorgeous curve Nina had and just snickered, bringing Chris' attention back to him.
"What?" Chris asked.
Jake just laughed again before imitating Chris' low voice and repeated, "Oh, please, call me Chris. Also I just saw you checking her out, don't even try to say you weren't."
"Shut up!" Now it was Chris shook his head with a smile while throwing his napkin at Jake, making him laugh.
"Chris, you do know it's not a crime to like her," Jake reminded his friend.
"Just drink your coffee," Chris smirked before sipping his own drink.
The pair sat at the table, drinking their coffee and chatting with each other as well as Nina until their shift was about to start. Chris picked up his empty cup as well as Jake's and brought them back to hand to Nina.
"It was lovely meeting both of you," Nina's charming voice enchanted Chris before kneeling down and scratching behind Serge's ears, making his tail wag as the woman loved on him. "I guess I'll be seeing you guys around."
"We come every morning before our shift so you'll be seeing a lot of us, unfortunately for you," Jake teased, making her squint up her eyes in laughter as she finished scratching the dog and stood back up and walked around the counter.
"It is actually unfortunate for you," Chris rested his thick forearms on the counter and leaned in closer to Nina and playfully whispered. "Jake thinks he's hilarious and loves to come in with a new joke of the day so pretend to laugh when he tells you one tomorrow."
This made Nina laugh even harder while Jake gave his partner a light shove and told him, "Shut up, Evans!"
Chris pushed himself off of the counter and put his big hands on Jake shoulders and playfully shook him while Jake walked out the door. Before Chris stepped out of the coffee shop, he rested his hand on the door and leaned against it, looked back at Nina.
"Well I'll see you tomorrow morning, same time, same place," He smiled.
"It's a date," Nina joked before waving at him as he walked out of the shop.
He took a few big steps to catch up with Jake and the two started their patrol on the streets. As they walked, Jake turned his head and looked at Chris with an amused smile. Chris saw the look and just asked, "What?"
Jake smiled and turned his head back to look ahead of him but went on, "I think you know what."
