"Happy Thanksgiving Chris," One of the neighbors smiled as the police officer walked by with Sarge trotting in front of him.
"Hey," Chris crossed the sidewalk to shake his hand and tell him, "Happy Thanksgiving to you too! Got any plans for today?"
"Just cooking the big dinner. What about you?" He wondered.
"Well this is Nina and my first Thanksgiving married, so she wanted to host my mother and brothers, her family, and then also my partner Jake just got engaged to Nina's sister so he's coming too," Chris chuckled while Sarge came over to stand by his legs, earning him a pat on the head, "But this guy had a lot of energy this morning so I decided to get out of Nina's hair and take him for a nice long walk."
The two neighbors kept chatting for a minute more before Chris looked at his watch and bid his neighbor goodbye before walking back up the street until he was pulling open the door to his home.
"Mhmm babe, it smells amazing in here," Chris was already salivating as he took Sarge's leash off before kicking his shoes off.
He didn't hear a response but walked down the hall behind the german shepherd and rubbed his hands together, calling out, "Alright, put me to work sweetheart. What can I do to help?"
When he rounded the corner to the kitchen he expected to see Nina there, looking all adorable in her apron while standing at the counter preparing something and she'd stop to greet him with a kiss and a hug, but that wasn't at all what he was met with.
Instead, he found shards of a broken bowl on the floor and a giant mess all over from the contents that must have been inside of it. There also was a pumpkin pie that looked as though it had been knocked off the counter and joined in the mess. Nina was sitting on the floor with her back against the cabinets while she held her face in her hands as she sobbed.
"Nina!" Chris exclaimed, instantly going into protect mode. He carefully stepped over the mess and the broken pieces of glass to get to his sweet wife. "Nina, honey, what happened?"
He gently pulled her hands away from her face, finally letting him see her. Chris always hated when she cried. It just tore him up to see her beautiful dark eyes filled to the brim with tears and her porcelain skin all red and blotchy. Her plump bottom lip quivered and Chris used the sleeve of his sweater to wipe away the tears on her cheeks before pushing her short hair behind her ears so he could cradle her cheeks in his hands and tell her, "It's okay, my love. I'm here. It's going to be okay."
Chris could almost see her little frame almost melt from his words, helping the tension leave her body but her emotions were still right at the surface while her tears started flowing again and she said in one big breath, "Chris everything is ruined! There was something on the floor and I slipped and fell and dropped the bowl of stuffing I had all over and my pie fell on the ground and now I have a big mess and no dessert and I cut my hand on a piece of the broken glass and I wanted this all to be so special for our first Thanksgiving and it's all ruined now."
"Oh sweetheart," Chris cooed as his precious wife was reduced to tears yet again.
He moved to sit next to her on the floor, resting his back up against the cabinets before he pulled Nina effortlessly onto his lap, sitting her sideways so he could hold her tight. His thick arms wrapped around her back and she instantly nuzzled her face into his neck, relaxing into his comfort.
"If you need to cry, then you just cry," He assured her, pressing little kisses to the top of her head while rubbing her back. Chris kept holding her tight while he assured her, "I've got you, my love. Just cry, just get it out."
Sensing and hearing the emotions going on, Sarge wandered through the kitchen to come over and lay his head on Nina's leg, offering the comfort he had to give. The group just stayed there for a long time until Nina's cries were down to sniffles.
When this happened, Chris got to his feet carefully, keeping Nina in his arms and carrying her bridal style up the stairs and into the bathroom. He sat her down on the counter, finally pulling the rag away from her hand and seeing the cut she had. Chris meticulously cleaned it and put a bandage on before lastly placing a kiss to her palm.
"Chris I-" Nina started to say but he put a finger on her lips to stop her.
"Shhh, tell me in a minute," His voice was low and warm.
Chris knew his wife was still a little upset so before she could get wrapped up again in the details of the day, he cradled her face in his hands before he took his time doting small little sweet kisses over every inch of her face. As he did so, he could hear her breathing finally return to normal as she relaxed and even saw her beautiful smile return once he was done.
"Okay, here's what's going to happen," Chris began while resting his big hands on the counter on either side of her. Before he went on, he couldn't help but steal a quick kiss and then told her, "You're going to take a shower and relax and I'm going to clean up the kitchen and call my mom and have her make the stuffing because she's been bugging me about what she can bring anyway. Then, when you're done getting ready, we can make another pie and everyone will come over and we'll have an amazing first Thanksgiving as husband and wife with our family. Then tonight once everyone is gone, I'm going to make love to you and not let you out of my arms the whole night. How does that sound for a plan?"
'There's that cute smile,' Chris thought to himself before Nina nodded and rested a hand on his stubbled cheek, "That sounds great. Thank you for always dealing with my meltdowns and comforting me. I always feel like everything will be fine when you've got me."
"My precious Nina," He beamed, looking right into her eyes before saying, "I'll always be here to hold you."
"I know."
