Nina's eyes grew wide and she froze when she opened the door to the cozy home. When she had left earlier this Saturday morning, everything had been peaceful and clean but now that she came home, it looked like a tornado had ripped through the house. Pillows and toys were scattered all across the living room and she could hear loud voices and the sound of a baby crying.
Ever since Sophie was born, Nina hadn't had a day away from the kids but this particular Saturday that Chris had off, he insisted she go out and do something fun. He even enlisted Sarah to take Nina out to lunch and to do, in his words 'whatever it is that sister's like to do.' Before she had left the house this morning, Nina made sure everything was clean and organized but Chris assured her everything would be fine.
Now that she had come home, it didn't seem like everything was fine.
She walked into the kitchen and she couldn't believe what she saw. Dirty bowls and plates covered the kitchen counter and a sack of flour had spilled all down a cabinet and on the floor. Ryan sat on a chair at the table, crying while he rubbed his little blue eyes that mirrored his father's while the next youngest, Logan, was being told by Chris not to play in the flour and Jack was trying to assist his father by getting Sarge out of the kitchen. This all was happening while Chris stood there holding the little baby girl in his arms, bouncing to try to sooth her crying that was rivaling Ryan's.
"Mommy!" Logan stopped drawing in the flour and happily ran over to hug her legs, making a puff of flour cover her pants.
"Nina!" Chris froze, horrified his wife came home from her relaxing day to find this mess. "Uh, you're home early."
"I missed you all so I came home," She explained.
Chris let out a soft sigh, taking in the sight of the kitchen while Ryan and Sophie's cries still filled the kitchen. He hated that Nina walked in on this scene but of course, his sweet wife, whom never seemed phased by anything just quietly sprung into action.
She led Sarge outside to the backyard along with Jack and Logan to let them play before going over to kneel in front of her youngest son. Chris kept bouncing Sophie, calming her cries while Nina worked on Ryan. She leaned in and kissed his forehead before pulling his chubby little hands away from his watery eyes and wipe away his tears.
"Now tell me what's wrong, sweetheart," Her soothing voice urged him while she ran a hand through his dark hair.
"I w-was trying to h-h-help Daddy but I s-s-spilled it," Ryan cried while pointing at the flour.
"Oh honey, it's alright," Nina smiled at him. "I'll clean it up and it's going to be just fine."
He nodded his little head and after Nina hugged him tight, she got him laughing while she pressed little kisses all over his face. Once he had a smile on his face again, she said, "Why don't you go outside and play with your brothers while I clean up, okay?"
Ryan nodded before he ran out to play and Nina stood back up and made her way to Chris. The police officer was rarely ever frazzled, given not only his personality but his job and training, but he certainly looked it today. He finally had gotten their baby girl to stop crying and Nina gently took the bundle out of his muscular arms and laid her down in the bassinet.
"Nina," Chris sighed once she turned around, feeling like he had disappointed her. "I'm so sorry."
"Sorry?" She asked, wrinkling her eyebrows up in confusion.
"Yeah, you were supposed to have a relaxing day and I wanted you to come home to a clean house and the kids all neat and ready for dinner and I even was trying to bake the chocolate cake you make until most of the ingredients landed on the floor," He chuckled even though his tone was missing any humor.
"It's okay sweetie," Nina consoled him while rubbing a hand on his muscular arm. "You've come home plenty of times to disasters and I've felt the same way."
"That's the thing though, I don't come home to disasters. The house doesn't look like a train wreck, the kids are always under control, you usually have something delicious baking and then you always greet me with a sweet kiss and it's just so wonderful to come home to that every day. I don't know how you do it and make it look so effortless and then I try to do it and it's a disaster, I feel like I should be a better dad than this," He let out a long sigh.
Nina refused to let him think that and after she hugged his thick frame tightly, she pressed a sweet kiss on his lips. She then put her hands on his stubbled cheeks and looked right into his blue eyes while telling him, "You are a wonderful father to our kids and one day that was a little chaotic doesn't change that. Sometimes it is a lot to manage and that's why we have each other and I don't ever want you to feel like you're failing me or them because that's not true. You are those kids hero... and to be honest, you're mine too."
Chris' entire face softened as his hunky shoulders relaxed. He wrapped his thick arms around her thin frame and held his precious wife against his chest, tucking her head under his stubbled chin while telling her, "I love you so much."
She smiled beautifully before kissing him again and telling him that she loved him. Before she could say anything else, Sophie started fussing and interrupted them. Chris went over to pick up their baby girl and bounce her gently to soothe her while Nina got to cleaning up the kitchen and started dinner.
Chris watched his wife quietly handle everything while he sat and fed Sophie her bottle. Nina got the boys inside and sent them to wash their hands while Chris cradled Sophie in his arms now that she was drifting off to sleep. Nina walked by her husband to get the dinner plates from the cabinet but he stopped her and had Nina lean in to kiss him.
"Thank you sweetheart, you always encourage me," He honestly told her, looking deep into her eyes.
"I'll always be here for you," She rested a hand on his stubbled cheek.
"I know you will be," Chris smiled before his lips curved into a smirk and a mischievous glint appeared in his eyes. "And later, I'm going to give you a proper thank you for all you did today, trust me."
