"Sargey!" Nina called out, opening the door to Chris' cozy home. "Sargey, it's me!"
A moment later, she heard his paws hitting the floor as he came running. Soon she saw his fluffy self come running down the stairs and she dropped to her knees to rub the dog as he licked her face. After getting some loving from Nina, she took him into the kitchen and put some of his favorite treats in a bowl and patted his head, leaving him to eat.
Nina picked up the cup she brought and climbed the stairs where she found Chris' door ajar. She knocked softly before poking her head in. She found Chris laying in his bed, blankets all askew as he watched a movie on TV. He had been home from the hospital for a couple days now but the poor man was still in a lot of pain.
"Hi sweetie," Nina greeted him as she walked into the room.
A wide lazy grin spread across his face as he smiled, "Mhmm, I love to see that face."
Nina walked over and sat down on the edge of his bed, leaning down to kiss him sweetly before running a hand through his hair and asked, "How are you feeling, baby?"
"I'm fine," Was the exact response she figured she'd get.
Nina just laughed while shaking her head, "You're still tough even when you've been shot."
"I'm really alright, Nina," He tried to assure her but when she brought her hand down and her fingertips barely brushed over where his wound was on accident, he gasped and winced, letting her know how bad it hurt.
"Oh Chris!" Her eyebrows arched in concern. "Let me see it."
"No, it's okay," The tough man insisted.
Nina gave him a look before reminding him, "I did go to nursing school, remember? I didn't drop out until I was almost finished so I do know what I'm looking at. Now let me see it and I'm not taking no for an answer Christopher."
He couldn't help but chuckle at her statement before he pushed the blanket down and then gently grabbed the edge of his loose tee shirt and pulled it up so that she could see his side. Nina gingerly pulled off the big bandage and looked at his wound. It was healing up well but she still cleaned it for him and put a new bandage on his side.
"Can I go get you something to drink or a snack or something?" Nina asked while she stood up and pulled the sheets on the bed up, tucking him in before fluffing his pillows and cleaning up the random garbage, tissues and empty bag of chips that were around.
"Nina," Chris chuckled. "You don't have to take care of me. You don't have to get me a thing."
"I know I don't have to, but I want to," Nina kissed his cheek. "Now I'm going to go bake you your favorite chocolate cake so you can have it for dessert and then I'll bring you up something to drink, how does that sound?"
Chris smiled at her from his spot on the bed. Since she was standing right next to the bed, he reached his hand out and held hers before gently tugging her down. When she leaned over him, he put his hand on the back of her neck and pulled her down even closer so that he could kiss her deeply.
Once they parted, Nina made sure the blankets were securely tucked around him and then went down to start baking the cake. Chris had never liked anyone taking care of him or fussing over him. He didn't want people to have to go out of their way for him and he was so used to being the one protecting other people that he felt weird when he was the one getting taken care of.
For some reason though, he didn't seem to mind it when Nina fussed over him. It made him feel kind of... special. It was nice to know somebody cared so deeply for him and it only showcased Nina's sweet nature even more that only reminded him how much he deeply adored her.
His thoughts drifted to the ring he had tucked in the back of his dresser drawer. He couldn't wait to call that sweet woman his wife and Chris thought about what Nina would be like as a mother. Chris could picture it right now, them having a little girl that looked just like her with caramel hair and a warm smile or a little boy who adored his mother. If one of them was sick, she'd be doing the same thing to them as she was to him.
She'd bring them in to lay in Chris' and her bed, and Nina would tuck them in, make them special meals and stroke their hair. She'd kiss their forehead and remind them how much she loves them and would make them feel like the most special person in the world, just as Nina made him feel.
Just that thought made Chris' heart feel like it was going to burst. He could hardly wait until one day that dream was true. He couldn't wait until one day this house was their home. Chris looked forward to all the little things, like all the throw pillows she would put on the couches, all the drawings she would do for their walls, seeing her clothes hanging next to his in the closet. But his favorite thought of all was opening the door, walking inside, and seeing his wife there. His smile grew even larger to think about walking in the house and hearing her call his name before some little kids called for their dad.
He knew without a doubt that Nina was the one for him. For Chris, that was the most obvious thing in the world and he had never been more sure of anything. He just hoped Nina felt the same way when he asked her. Chris still hadn't thought of the perfect way to propose but he didn't have time to think about it now because Nina came walking back into the bedroom with Sarge right on her tail.
Sarge hopped up on the bed and curled up at Chris' feet while Nina sat down on the edge of the bed once again and put a tray full of things on nightstand, telling him, "Okay I brought you a beer, a coffee and a glass of water so you could pick what you wanted and I got your favorite cookies and some jelly beans. Your cake is in the oven and later I'll make you anything you want for dinner."
"You are too good to me," Chris reached up, tucking her soft wavy hair behind her ear so he could see more of her beautiful face. "I love you so much."
"I love you," Nina smiled while resting her hand on his stubbled cheek. "Now, what else can I get you or do for you?"
"I shouldn't have taken a shower this morning and then I could have asked you to to take one with me," He wiggled his eyebrows.
"Christopher Robert!" She laughed. "You're terrible!"
He just snickered before he patted the empty spot on the bed next to him, telling her that he wanted her there. Nina happily walked over and climbed in the bed, curling up to his side without the wound and Chris' thick arm wrapped around her. She nestled her head on his chest and rested her hand on his toned pecs covered in his soft tee shirt and he leaned down to kiss the top of her head. In that moment, even though his side was aching from his bullet wound, he didn't seem to mind the pain as long as he had his Nina.
