"Woah! This is so cool!" Ryan announced when they all walked into the small dorm room.
The oldest Evans sibling looked at his brother and asked, "How is it cool? It's pretty cramped."
"Yeah but now you finally have to share your room with someone and Logan and I get our own rooms now," He proudly grinned.
Logan just laughed while patting Jack's back and said, "The tables have finally turned!"
"Jack is leaving for college and you guys are being mean to him!" Sophie protested, feeling emotional about her eldest brother leaving for college.
Chris and Nina watched as all the boys immediately softened and apologized to their sister who was getting wrapped up in a big hug by Jack while he told her, "You need to keep those monkeys of brothers we have in line for me while I'm gone, okay? And you two better take care of Sophie!"
"Hey now that you're gone, she'll just have dad being overprotective of her instead of both you and him," Logan chuckled.
"That's my job," Chris interjected, putting his hands on Sophie's shoulders and kissing her cheek which caused her to smile.
It didn't take long for everyone to start bringing boxes in and got Jack's half of the door room set up. Nina made his bed and helped him put some photos on the walls while Chris and Logan assembled a desk for him. Sophie and Ryan put away his clothes in the small closet but all of it went so fast... too fast for Nina's liking. Once they had all gone out to dinner and gotten back to the college campus, it came time for the moment Nina had been dreading.
Jack gave each member of the family a hug and when he lastly wrapped his arms around Nina, she tried her best to keep her tears at bay. When he let go of his mother, he put his hands on her shoulders just like Chris did, and looked into her eyes, saying, "I'll face time you tomorrow after I have my first class and we can talk."
"I'd love that," She blinked back her tears and kissed his cheek. "Don't forget to call Janey tonight, she was so sad she couldn't come with us and wanted to make sure you're all settled in. But you get some good sleep tonight okay?"
"I will mom, I promise," Jack smiled before he got a big bear hug and some encouraging words from his father.
All too soon, the family was walking down the hall and Chris noticed the way that Nina turned and looked at the door before exiting the building. He wrapped a thick arm around his sweet wife, seeing her profusely blinking to try to rid herself of her tears. Chris used his free hand to pull the keys out of his pocket and tossed them to Logan saying, "You guys can get in the car, Mom and I will be there in a minute."
Once the two were alone, Chris kept an arm draped around Nina's waist as the two slowly walked and he gently asked her, "Are you alright, sweetheart?"
Now that Nina was in the safe presence of her doting husband, she finally let her true emotions show and she wept softly while leaning into him and explained, "It's just so weird, Chris. We're dropping Jack off and he's not coming home."
"I know baby," He empathized while kissing her temple before they kept walking and he tried to console her, "But he's just three hours away and he's going to be coming home all the time on the weekends and we can always come down to visit and we'll face time him so much it'll be just like normal."
"You're right but it just is so hard. He's our first baby and now he's all grown up and going to college," Soft tears cascaded down her cheeks.
Chris stopped walking and pulled his precious wife against his firm chest, rubbing her back while resting his chin on the top of her head, engulfing her in his embrace. He just held her while assuring Nina, "It's okay to be sad, my love. I'm sad too, it's going to be hard to get used to but we'll be okay."
"I'm always okay as long as I have you," She lifted her head and looked up into his clear blue eyes.
The handsome police officer smiled before leaning down and pressing a soft kiss to her lips. Nina closed her eyes, just enjoying the feeling until she heard a familiar voice calling out, "Hey mom!"
The parents pulled apart and saw Jack jogging toward them. Nina couldn't help but smile, seeing how much Jack mirrored Chris, reminding her of when she first met him back before either of them had aged and had the wrinkles around their eyes and the few grey hairs sprinkled in. She watched Jack slow his pace as he stood in front of her and Chris asked, "What are you doing out here, bud?"
"Well I realized I forgot to tell Mom something," Jack started with a wide smile, looking at his weepy eyed mother and said, "I forgot to tell you that I love you. I mean, I know that you know it, but I told everyone else and I forgot to tell you when I hugged you goodbye and I just couldn't let you leave without saying how much I love you Mom."
In that moment, Nina was powerless to stop her tears. She threw her arms around her tall son, hugging him tight while her tears rolled down over her cheeks. Jack smiled, feeling so loved by his sensitive mother and Chris felt like his heart was melting as he watched the scene play out.
After a while, Nina let go of her eldest son and wiped the tears off her cheek with the back of her hand before reaching up to cup Jack's cheek and told him, "I love you so much and you know if you ever need anything, Dad and I are just a phone call away."
"I know Mom," He smiled at her.
Chris squeezed Jack's shoulder before he wrapped his arm around Nina's shoulders and said, "Alright love, we should probably get going."
The three all shared another round of hugs before the couple started walking toward the car. Once again, Chris saw Nina turn and look over her shoulder, seeing Jack waving at them and this time all he saw was a smile on Nina's face and so much love in her heart.
